Totally. This app was a POC to show it is possible to make XMTP and ATProto work together nicely. You can put the keys in any secure storage. Most production XMTP apps do.
Completely agree RPC providers add complexity and risk. This is Phase 1 of decentralization, and plan is to remove RPC dependencies from core message processing in favor of protocol-native BFT.
Smart contracts are still an amazing way to collect and distribute $$$. Wouldn't want to lose that part
