Circling back to this
Yesterday the main opposition party to Macron and the far right in France was classified as "extreme left"
This is a further step in the demonisation of the left and the concurrent mainstreaming of the far right
@frasermcqueen.bsky.social's piece is illuminating on this

I wrote for Red Lines @reacpolrn.bsky.social about the killing of French neo-fascist Quentin Deranque & the demonisation of the left/mainstreaming of far-right politics. Grateful to all three editors, and to @aurelmondon.com for the invitation! Link below:

🟥 Red Lines 🟥
'The reaction, from far right to centre left, to Deranque’s death has been nothing short of shameful, particularly at a time when the far right and fascism are increasingly powerful'.

Getting this one in early but Mandelson didn't kill himself
7 years (!!) today since the happiest picture of me ever taken. Do not miss this at all tbh, a sport that needs you to constantly stress over your ability to make weight (even when not fighting soon) was a terrible mix with my character/brain wiring, but lots of good memories/lessons from it too.
Goodness, if only there were some extremely fucking obvious explanation for why Rangers would have been given nine minutes to find a winner.
BBC subtitling guy got a bit nervous I think
'Come to our workshop on harnessing genAI for academic work' - thank u. I would rather have kidney stones ❤️
Turned up to a lecture theatre this AM to find it was locked. Waited in the rain with 90 students for 10 minutes. Estates got there and opened the door, which was apparently unlocked after all, very easily. A story that sums up my general hapless vibe perhaps better than any other.
Me, someone's mean teacher: you will never amount to anything
(Internally: I certainly hope I won't be proven wrong about this)
Yeah the 'beurette' trope def seems relevant! Nacira Guénif's distinction between beurette/française voilée too (in La République mise à nu par son immigration, 2006)
Just did a v basic search (on my phone while resting between sets at the gym like a proper bro) - is something like this any good? Or maybe modest fashion itself is already quite bourgeois coded?

Ah right! No idea on tracksuits - nothing from the top of my head on the hijab as a fashion item as opposed to the usual laïcité femonationalism etc (can keep thinking, not on my computer just now), but might publications on e.g. burkini, sports hijabs etc be similar?
Like comparing the tracksuit and the hijab? Or about girls wearing hijabs with a tracksuit? Tbh nothing comes to mind but could have a think!
Heartbreaking when you do an online shop and they send you the green bananas
WHY YOU NEED A HUMAN TRANSLATOR 🚨
DeepL is able to correctly identify that Spongebob's French name is Bob l'éponge. What it can't do is tell you that Squidward's name, for some reason, is Carlo. Do you want your readers to think you're SOME KIND OF MORON who doesn't know about Carlo Tentacule?
I'll be thinking about this weeks from now 🫠
Just sent an email to about 100 people only to immediately notice I'd included the words 'further details' twice in the same sentence. Nightmarish. Awful. Why do bad things happen to good people
ITS SO GOOD
Big entering middle age moment today as i'm absolutely buzzing to have got a dyson
43-YEAR-OLD CRAIG GORDON ♥️
Accidentally clicked laugh react on a very routine email from someone I don't really know. Why do bad things happen to good people
Again, I'm not well informed on this, so don't mean to suggest that anti-American imperialism necessarily equates to being 'one of the goodies'. Ffs though, consent manufacturing machine go brrrrrr
I'm not well informed on Venezuela tbh but can't get my head around how much of a total fucking rube anyone vaguely familiar with the history of US intervention in Latin America would need to be to think that yes, everything they've heard about Maduro is surely unambiguously accurate.
People are going to try and lure you into debates about whether Maduro was a good guy or not and the thing is, it doesn’t matter for the purposes of discussing whether violent kidnappings and extrajudicial murders by the US government are ok. No, they aren’t! End of convo.
Oh no
Imagine needing to live in nine towns/cities, and three countries, only to realise 16 years after moving out that the most beautiful place you're ever likely to visit is your hometown 🤯
tonight isn’t the end—it’s a new year
It does seem some of the media coverage of her passing is reflecting some of this. I don't suppose I'm suggesting her death should immediately be followed by blanket vilification, but the tone of some of the 'iconic French actress' stuff is already pretty nauseating.
