I agree, since Citizens United it’s obscene how much corporate cash flows into elections. It’s Tammany Hall and the railroad barons of the 20th century, but with less style.
But there is hope and it comes in the form of voting.
NYC mayor Mamdani and Seattle mayor Wilson have proven it’s possible.
I’d love a direct democracy where the populace votes on everything, but since a third of the USA can’t be bothered to vote on anything, in the meantime we gotta vote for representatives of our interests.
I would also like that populace to be well-informed, which is a very tall ask indeed.
We elect people to carry out (or not) those policies. For instance, Trump is performing constitutional nullification and congress is allowing it, because we voted for those dingbats.

We do have a referendum on all national policies every 4 years.
