Lack of consensus derailed progress on the fossil-fuel phase-out roadmap, one of COP30's primary ambitions. However, Brazil launched efforts to tackle deforestation and create this roadmap outside of the official COP process, which offers a promising workaround to consensus-based paralysis.
The COP30 Examined Climate Conversation speakers unpacked the outcomes of negotiations in Belém, finding little forward movement, with fundamental issues around lack of consensus preventing the implementation of actionable policy. Read more here: climatesolutions.ubc.ca/news-and-eve...

This Solutions Scholars project will explore whether ways of framing climate extreme impacts, such as through terms of frequency (eg once every 10 years), likelihood (eg 20 times more likely in a year), or temperature (eg making a heatwave 1.2 degrees warmer) have an impact on mobilizing action.
