Sibongile Ntuli, a community member, shared her appreciation: “Today made my day! I learned new techniques and equipment, and receiving free equipment is a blessing. Thank you, WILDTRUST, for thinking of us.”
Participants were introduced to alternative cooking solutions, such as rocket and gas stoves, and gained practical, hands-on experience using the equipment. These approaches help lower fuel consumption, reduce costs, and minimise environmental impact.
As part of the initiative, the team distributed energy-efficient cooking equipment, including hot boxes and cast-iron pot sets, while showcasing climate-smart cooking approaches.
Recently, WILDTRUST, led by Nonduduzo Mkhize, hosted an Efficient Cooking Demonstration session at the Mabibi Community Resource Hub located in iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site, to strengthen food security for vulnerable households.
Let’s celebrate and safeguard the ocean’s living treasures, because when nature thrives, we all thrive.
Kelp is considered medicinal due to its numerous health benefits. It's known for its high iodine content, which is essential for healthy thyroid function. In addition, kelp is rich in important nutrients, packed with antioxidants, supports digestive health, and may assist with weight management.
Often called the backbone of marine ecosystems, kelp forests provide shelter and food for a diverse range of underwater species, supporting rich biodiversity beneath the waves. But kelp’s value extends far beyond the ocean.
To celebrate this year’s World Wildlife Day, themed “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods,” we are shining a spotlight on one of the ocean’s most remarkable plants, kelp.

We are grateful to collaborate with SANBI, iSimangaliso WPA, EKZNW, Bhekula Community Trust, and Lake Sibaya Development & Conservation Trust in helping us spearhead our vision of a ‘Thriving and Resilient World.'
It’s a fast way of collecting biodiversity information which will help to show all the species in each area, collect important scientific data to build national biodiversity records while encouraging community involvement in protecting nature.
Various activities will be taking place over this week, including a BioBlitz exercise, which is a fun event where scientists, volunteers, and community members work together to find and record as many species as possible in an area.
It encourages responsible use of the land, protects nature for future generations, and ensures that community needs are included in conservation plans. Both the Mabasa and Bhekula communities have been involved every step of the way.
By participating in Biodiversity stewardship, the communities become recognised guardians of their natural environment. By choosing to start this journey, it helps communities take charge of their land and its natural resources.
CCAs are formed through a rigorous process called a Biodiversity Stewardship programme where the communities who own or use the land choose to work with conservation authorities to protect the plants, animals, and natural areas.
CCAs are areas owned or used by communities where nature is protected and managed mainly by the local people. They can be formally or informally protected and are usually on communal land.
WILDTRUST lead transformative environmental impact in communities.
This week our team is visiting the Mabasa and Bhekula communities in Northern KZN (25 -27 February) to engage in discussions around the formal proclamation of these areas as Community Conservation Areas (CCAs).

Ms Shabalala, Principal of Sakhesethu Primary School, expressed her appreciation, “All thanks to WILDTRUST, the learners entered a reading competition and excelled! This annual Readathon Competition, hosted by the Ocean and Awareness team, has significantly boosted their confidence.”
Learners received Volume 1 of the book in both English and isiZulu, and Volume 2 in English. For the very first time, Grade 6 learners received their own copies.
During these visits, the team distributed over 3,700 copies of the educational book Harry the Hammerhead Shark, profiling the many amazing Marine Protected Areas along our coastline.
These visits were linked to World Read Aloud Day, which was celebrated earlier this month.
Last week, the Ocean and Awareness team of the uThukela Marine Protected Area (MPA) Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Project, funded by the @blueactionfund.org, visited 13 primary schools located within the uThukela MPA under the Macambini and Mkhwanazi Traditional Authorities.
Together, we can help create a better, more resilient world for future generations. 🌱
