There's another dynamic going on, which no one in the mainstream press I've seen has touched (though @polgreen.bsky.social got closest), and that's the fact that it is unprecedented to ban or heavily restrict a treatment on the basis that the evidence isn't high quality enough.

This is consistent in the fedi as well.

It's true that moderation tools are poor just from a technical perspective, but what is even worse is that they are being built by folks who do not respect diverse culture.

This has been a consistent theme for my entire 20+ years on the web.

Any attempt to argue against this is like pissing into the rain.

You CANNOT argue with this, you can’t have a conversation with this. It’s just impossible because there’s no shared discursive ground.

Given the discursive and rhetorical moves on display here and strategy that involves “reaching across the isle” is a waste of time. They’re just not interested.

So, this is a category mistake. Defining a woman and defining fraud are two DIFFERENT things and Mace is evacuating the difference between them by ignoring the fact that words mean things beyond their definition.

Like, at this point I’m thinking that it’s not JUST that Bluesky devs thought it could provide a technical solution to a social problem, it’s that they didn’t even understand the social problems they were trying to solve in the first place.

I still think blocklists are good, but they’re not an unalloyed good and their deployment on BlueSky fails (like most moderation tools On Here) to recognize that federation and decentralization don’t automatically eliminate the oppressive structures inherited from past platforms.

If you ever want to read a paper for free and can't find it otherwise, email the lead author and politely ask for a copy. You will not be bothering the person. You will in fact make their whole entire day. I have had scientists get so excited I asked they sent me everything they ever published.
