This amounts to a techno-solutionist response that risks cutting young people off from support, identity and community, while leaving the wider digital ecology toxic for everyone.
Surveying 2,500+ Australians, we found 2/3 support the ban—including many who say online free speech is “very important”. We argue this reflects moral panic and a tendency to treat young people as passive recipients of content rather than active producers of culture, care and political engagement.
I have a new co-authored article out in Continuum, with Rob Cover, Ingrid Richardson and Daniel X Harris.
We examine Australia’s social media age ban and ask why it gained such strong adult support, despite limited evidence that blanket bans reduce harm.

While users will still be allowed to follow accounts that post about political and social issues, accounts posting such content will not be recommended and content posted by nonpolitical accounts that is political in nature or includes social commentary also won’t be recommended, Meta said. The company said it also won’t show users posts focused on laws, elections or social issues from accounts those users don’t follow.
Meta's "no politics allowed" stance is 1) itself a political position, and 2) so impossible to enforce that it's instead a perverse guarantee that what political content does surface will be absolutely deranged, in that the algorithms will be unable to identify it as conventionally political
