Why the biggest campaign buzzword ‘tapped into a broader political hunger’ “Affordability” is shaping the political conversation like never before as wages struggle to keep up with cost increases.

“Affordability” is the word of the moment.

Even as economic indicators show growth and cooling inflation, many Americans still struggle to afford the basics, leaving, as ESP’s @mtkonczal.bsky.social puts it, “a little less left over to enjoy things.”

Research is hard and can be very arduous. So much good work gets wasted because researchers effectively spike the ball at the one yard line, because they think they're above making things look nice.

Especially in the economic policy space, research needs to be legible to have any public impact.

These two visualizations are the same data, just visualized differently. This comes from a report that I helped a professor with, aimed at giving the NY state legislature an update on the economic outlook.

And is case-in-point why research communication is so important.

This project represents decades of work and advocacy on the part of the leadership and steering committee, and my little design contribution comes much later.

So this is my plea to all researchers: forget your h-index, do cool and important work, I promise someone will eventually join in to help.

Did a quick redesign of the Friends of BLS site!

Fantastic group. @aaronsojourner.org is so helpful, Bill Beach is hilarious, and Paul is so easy to work with.

This is a project I believe in, a cause I support, and with my design background it was super easy for me to help.

Opinion | The real Trump affordability "hoax" Josh Bivens: For typical families, the Trump agenda is near-guaranteed to harm their incomes far more than it can possibly reduce their prices.

Trump says he's "won affordability." @joshbivens-econ.bsky.social's latest for @msnownews.bsky.social explains how the data shows a different story...and a policy path toward real affordability wins for U.S. families.

Indiana lawmakers are once again trying to weaken child labor laws: Bill sponsored by business owner would enable employers to hide child labor violations Coordinated, industry-backed campaigns to weaken child labor protections continue to target state legislatures in 2026. The outro to these videos for #TheGreenBookProject are my favorite. I love how the silhouette visuals work with the logos, and I love the “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” line from the Promise Land speech by MLK.

My days can be a bit busy but these are all projects I deeply believe in.

I’m somewhat of a rare breed, as an empiricist focused in inequality, but with a skill set in design. And all I want to do is double-bounce these incredible public-facing projects with good visuals.

On the train to #NationalGuard drill this weekend.

Today, I ref’d a paper for Computational Econ, then edited a video for @justinwolfers.bsky.social

Then redesigned the Friends of BLS site for @aaronsojourner.org. Then saw @trevondlogan.bsky.social post a video I made for #TheGreenBookProject!

Bottom line: the economy can “grow” while life feels more precarious. The most alarming part is not these new technology—it’s how thin the credible policy answers still are. #EconSky

The lessons from trade: the “just retrain workers” has been the default story for decades—and it didn’t work well for trade shocks, and probably won't work for AI. The lesson is not anti-tech; it’s that transition policy has to be real, funded, and scalable.

Also shoutout @ucstonecenter.bsky.social for elevating the conversation. The broader tax takeaway for me, wrt AI, is that correcting for disruption is fiscal by nature (income replacement, stabilizers, new tax bases), so treating taxation as inherently suspect boxes policy in.

With respect to taxes, shoutout: @durlauf.bsky.social responded to the Bowles debate by clarifying the technical record and interpreting the underlying point generously—serious policy evaluation needs defensible interpersonal comparisons and a willingness to engage redistribution as a live option.
