It's also easy to accidentally "resove" from a less stable mode to the major mode. For example if you play the chords that in the relative major mode would be a V-I movement, it (generally) feels like you've resolved to that major key.

What made it click for me is that everything is relative to the "key center".

What is the key center? It's subjective and complicated. It's whichever chord feels most resolved given what you have heard up to that point.

But it's subjective! There's no algorithm you can run to prove a key center.

Dunno bout direct3d, but in Vulkan, it happens when the pipeline gets created, tho since vulkan 1.3 you can set face direction to be dynamic, allowing it to be set at draw-call time.
