The biggest difference from the era before AI tools became useful and widely accessible, most of those PRs were low effort or obviously wrong changes that were very easy to sift out and immediately close in very quick review.
The problem has been prevalent before AI, especially when you look at the authors of those slop PRs and you'll notice that they're mostly students who are desperate to build their GitHub portfolios.
