One was a WW2 vet (machine gunner on the Western front) then machinist when he returned home. The other was a sharecropper who grew tobacco as a cash crop + subsistence farming for the family of 11 kids. They were pretty badass. Also a decent fiddle player.

I was driving around out where my Dad was raised and he pointed out a little abandoned house where the whole family got the Spanish flu and died except the oldest daughter who was institutionalized for the rest of her life after having everyone around her pass away. My great grandparents lived near.

I would survive any number of downhill events by just falling over almost immediately.
