I’m not sure I’ve seen enough discussion about the fact that when cars are “self driving”, they are actually just owned by a company, and that company can turn them off whenever they like.

Or in other words:
Whoever controls the algorithm also feels the fire.
*Same thing with the electric scooters, which were thrown into the fires.

In an era where ICE can't operate without Palantir (look at the company's stock rise this week), and a Waymo vehicle isn't just a robotaxi but also a surveillance device on wheels, it's clear that the struggle isn't just political. It's also infrastructural. (And honestly, it always was.)

Streets are flooded with surveillance cameras, algorithms govern urban management, and cars have become powerful surveillance devices that collect data that goes who knows where. Since the authorities operate through tech companies, the protest also updates its version.

Instead, protesters target tools belonging to a tech giant (Waymo is owned by Alphabet, Google's parent company)
The LA protests are primarily aimed at an administration pursuing vicious immigration policies and the ICE enforcing them. But in a digital city, even resistance evolves with the times

Protesters order a driverless car through the app, direct it to the protest site, then set it ablaze to block traffic.
It's unpleasant and quite polluting, but there's a strategic precision to it: no civilians are harmed, no private cars are burned, and no drivers are injured—because there are none.

Over the weekend in Los Angeles, as protests erupted following ICE raids throughout the city, demonstrators began setting fire to Waymo autonomous taxis. This isn't random vandalism or isolated incidents—it's a deliberate tactic.
