Had a fascinating and informative chat with Clinton Fernandes on @3rrrfm.bsky.social about the war on Iran, global oil politics, and Australia's support for the US/Israeli attacks.

"106. Then, as now, the relevant legislation provided that income support benefits be calculated and paid on a fortnightly basis by reference to the amount of income from other sources β€˜first earned, derived or received’ by the recipient during each fortnight.
107. Generally, it was considered that calculation and payment on a
fortnightly basis would provide recipients with a more beneficial
outcome than application of the amount of income in fact from other
sources in fact earned during the fortnight.
108. It was recognised, however, that there would be circumstances in
which averaging or apportioning could disadvantage a recipient and,
therefore, that particular care needed to be taken in β€˜Assessing
verified income where fortnightly details cannot be obtained’.
109. Until the advent of the Online Compliance Intervention (OCI) program that began operating in 2015, that β€˜particular care’ consisted of a labour-intensive process of investigation undertaken by experienced social security compliance officers that included seeking details from employers and other relevant sources of information and engaging with recipients to glean and assess all forms of available relevant information.59
110.
Although there were cases where the process of averaging or
apportioning led to an overestimation of fortnightly income, there
were apparently few instances of that occurring and fewer, if any,
complaints. In the case of those few recipients who were dissatisfied
with the outcome of the process, there was then, as there is now, a
right of internal departmental review and a right to apply to the
Administrative Appeals Tribunal (now the Administrative Review
Tribunal) for merits review of the assessment.60

NACC report incorrectly states that the current income test still assesses income 'first earned, derived or received' in a fortnight (changed in 2020). Also links robodebt averaging to historical income apportionment without mentioning this was also unlawful (until retrospectively validated in 2025)

Just close the NACC down. Utterly useless organisation.

TOTALLY

It's bullshit. In my eyes and in the public eyes they're mid-level because they're not the secretaries or ministers.
No-one will face charges, no-one is going to read the 445-page report which rehashes what the RC found, and the whole thing was a years-long exercise in kicking the can down the road.

Same guy...

11.03.2026 00:46 πŸ‘ 21 πŸ” 5 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

And no-one will be charged because the NACC isn’t referring anything to the DPP.
So that’s it.
Everyone walks away, no one who was responsible for the worst govt malfeasance in the country’s history - costing lives and billions of $ - will ever face justice.
The NACC is for covering up corruption.

11.03.2026 00:20 πŸ‘ 47 πŸ” 21 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

What the NACC has essentially done, after years β€œinvestigating”, is restate two findings made against lower level robodebt execs, and *toss out* the much more serious allegations against the likes of Katherine Campbell and Scott Morrison etc.
That’s it for the NACC. This will be the final straw.

10.03.2026 23:47 πŸ‘ 85 πŸ” 32 πŸ’¬ 4 πŸ“Œ 1

Same goes for the other corruption finding. The NACC is just regurgitating what the RC already found.
This is from 2023: β€œThe Commission's view is that Mr Withnell engaged in deliberate conduct designed to mislead cabinet."

10.03.2026 23:44 πŸ‘ 30 πŸ” 5 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

The royal commission already found that Serena Wilson misled the ombudsman. In 2023.
It took the NACC three years to copy and paste this uncontroversial finding.

10.03.2026 23:40 πŸ‘ 50 πŸ” 9 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

What a fucking crock.
Two mid-level officials found to be corrupt by the NACC, but the big guns get off scot-free forever.

love how we killed the old, frail anti-nuke ayatollah just to have him replaced with his young, healthy son who wants nukes and who just had his father, mother, wife, and child murdered on the same day by his mortal enemy. surely this will bring peace to the region

Things look grim in the markets right now, but at least the U.S. economy wasn’t already being propped up by a massive speculative AI bubble that is highly sensitive to rising energy costs.

This is the craziest story - Israeli troops in Lebanon, in a firefight with Hezbollah, a cemetery, and the reported body of a missing pilot from the 1980s.

You can tell how much Labor and the Coalition care about the poor Iranians by the way they hastily built a series of offshore concentration camps to imprison Iranian refugees *forever* when they tried to escape the regime.
