Legit feels like this
if we had an opposition party they'd oppose things
...and more like a fart.
One Piece is jam-packed with very thoughtful and intentional character design choices, despite of and in support of the wacky cartoonishness. But to just slap different hair on the same female body we're meant to care about while some dudes can look like a dorito chip feels less like a choice...
If Yamato was still drawn like that, but characters like Tashigi or Nami or Bonney (blech) were at the very least different heights and slightly different proportions, it would feel far more intentional in a way that's interesting. But it doesn't feel intentional, and that's the issue.
And to clarify my clarification, lmao, I don't think Yamato needs to physically transition in order to be legit, I just think the way he's drawn signals to readers "this is another sexy lady that we can objectify." The visual language is limited by the obligation to provide gooners with material
...and this leads to transphobes who don't understand how gender works pointing at the way Oda draws him to deny the ACTUAL LITERAL text. They'd probably be mad about it no matter how well Oda did it, but because he's stuck drawing 99% of female-presenting bodies the same, the story is muddled.
Continuing with One Piece as an example, it's actually backfired on the perception of the story Oda is explicitly trying to tell, most notably with Yamato. Canonically a trans man, but because he hasn't medically transitioned, Oda draws him with the same comically busty frame as all the women...
And just to clarify, I am ALL FOR sexy characters, 10000% go for it, chase your bliss, but this is unfortunately not it gang, we gotta find better ways to be horny that don't destroy people's brains and don't reinforce systems of exploitation, especially for a young impressionable audience
we saw it here in the uk.
that absurd supreme court ruling rolled by trans rights to 2004... but in order to do it they had to find a legal definition of the word 'woman' that excluded trans women and that required them rolling back women's rights, legally, to 1975!
It should be notable that the live-action adaptation is near-universally acclaimed, by both fans and non-fans alike, and the largest noticable difference it has is they are WAAAAAAY less fucking weird about women
Thankfully the live-action show (for now) doesn't do this, and when characters are hot, they're just hot, and it's not embarrassing or forced or deflating or distracting.
If they ever get far enough to introduce Bonney though they are in TROUBLE because WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE'S 10 YEARS OLD
I fucking love One Piece, I'm honestly embarrassed it took me so long to finally get into it, but it's so fucking deflating to come across scenes and shots like this and realize THIS is what I've been recommending to people.
It completely breaks the exaggerated cartoony style, sticks out like a sore thumb and undermines the message of societal liberation that One Piece otherwise has pumping through its veins. It feels like the price the rest of the story has to pay to get published, and it's such a bummer, man
It's especially glaring in One Piece's art style. Male characters can look like anything, and female characters are sharply divided between "attractive" and "unattractive" and all the "attractive" ones look exactly the fuckin same, and it's only gotten worse. Look what they did to Tashigi. JFC
Does anybody ACTUALLY find this shit "sexy"? I kind of don't believe it, it's much more plausible that people are performing their own titillation to meet society expectations, frankly. Is anybody's heart actually still in this? Feels like creators are getting tired and lazy with it too.
Hot take but the way that Oda draws the industry-obligatory constant sexualization of women actively makes his art WORSE
It actually physically hurts to look at sometimes
While I agree with not voting in categories you're not actually qualified to vote in, the qualification is literally "watch a cartoon."
If you can't watch movies that make up a quarter of all box office grosses then what are you even doing in this industry? How can you consider yourself up-to-date?
1. A new NHS England Review excluded 97% of all trans care studies to conclude that trans youth care doesn't work.
It explicitly violates several guidelines around reviewing literature, and appears to be politics masquerading as (shoddy) science.

Gaza Sunbirds has a mobile cinema where they move between camps providing much needed joy for the children of Gaza by showing kids films such as Ratatouille.
This is a much needed respite for all of the kids in Gaza, and with our help, we can make a difference. Donation link is in the comments.
The reviews used to justify this excluded nearly 97% of all studies from inclusion in their analysis. This is an absolutely obscene hatchet job by the NHS specifically created to eliminate access to hormones for trans youth.
The guy who made mother! is shepherding the legitimation of genAI, which is only outmatched in its potential for environmental devastation by literal bombs
The anti-woke types would have you believe that the entire corporate world was deeply gripped by climate concern.
Ask yourself: given their subsequent behavior, how deep was the grip, really?
Climate & DEI supposdly had a chokehold on all of American culture & yet the entire corporate & political establishment immediately, theatrically abandoned them the first time a right-winger said boo. Makes you wonder.
Can we just start exclusively referring to these guys as serial killers until it catches on
I know people are very sensitive about the use of the word βgenocideβ but the attempts to medically eliminate trans children is very clearly meets the standard because they are trying to eliminate a population and also they know some of those kids are going to kill themselves
And it's been a documented intent from these fascists since years before they took over the presidency, because they're not hiding their plans (and that's what makes what's happening so frustrating)
cannot stress enough that "separate the art from the artist" was meant for private individuals reconciling the art they love with its flawed creators and not meant for the ceo of a company driving a dump truck of money up to a bigot's front porch

It was also, apparently, the last point in time we apparently taught children how to actually *read* instead of just recognize words????
