For my take, I really have no way on why I get so many rejection from my applications to jobmarkets.
All I do is to write, post, waiting for a response, use the opportunity for the interview if possible. But seeing just the declines frustrates me drastically.
I wish I can do more... but I can't.

And this is when I admit that I haven't actually dabbled in what's already out there - I can set up a code forge for myself but I need 2 people to properly test a messaging service :pp
The thing that I think is closest to this is XMPP, but I know nothing more about it.
But if you make communication simple: theoretically if everyone knows the protocol, they can talk to anyone else even without use of an app, so you can't be restricted.
If all it takes is an afternoon to make a client, you can't control all of them (just look at gemini github.com/kr1sp1n/awes...)
I think if you're looking at the issue of avoiding restriction, one big thing is focusing on protocols/standards over services.
Obviously these protocols need to be secure, and the only way for this to happen is for them
to be open source and decentralised, so you are right.

We need to build and use platforms that can't be restricted, can't have backdoors. But many are afraid of change and losing convenience. If they remove our rights bit by bit, the easy way out is to comply. So there has to come a point that we have to look for solutions, not alternatives.
Its definitely a bad omen, but not for discord, for our digital rights. Hopping over to a clone platform with the same colour scheme and hosted in the same country (which now has laws letting the gvmt see all user data) won't change anything - one company losing profits doesn't change the industry.
And now follows some thoughts I had on the way back from uni that seemed a waste not to write down (I miss my 2048 character limit):
Yes, but what you describe can apply to a forum and I think many people wouldn't be happy switching to that.
Its harder than you'd think to capture what the majority want from discord, but I'll admit that the number of proper clones is minimal.
