Absolutely the cutest!

A photo of the fantastic northern flicker (Colaptes auratus), a sleek taupe-colored woodpecker with a gray head and tan face, dark eyes, a long dark gray beak, bright red cheek patches, a large black chevron across its chest, black barring across its back and wings, black polka dots all over its belly, a red spot on the back of its head, and red-orange tail feathers outlined and tipped in black underneath. It is a male perched on the top of a wooden trellis facing toward the left of frame with its beak open mid-call, and it has a little bit of reddish dirt on its beak from pecking in the ground where it likes to hunt for ants. The background is blurred greenery and pale cloudy sky.

The general plumage of the Tawny Frogmouth is silver-grey, slightly paler below, streaked and mottled with black and rufous. A second plumage phase also occurs, with birds being russet-red. The eye is yellow in both forms, and the wide, heavy bill is olive-grey to blackish. With their nocturnal habit and owl-like appearance, Tawny Frogmouths are often confused with owls, but are actually more closely related to the nightjars. Their feet are weak however, and lack the curved talons of owls. The leading edges of the first primary (wing) feathers of the Tawny Frogmouth are fringed to allow for silent flight. This fella sits on a greenish tree stump.

Beauty, like cuteness, is in the eye of the beholder. I just love our Tawny Frogmouths.
