So it feels like a cultural fixture way deeper than a fad. You even get grumblings in Argentina about the Caribbeanization of the culture, which has some clearly unsavory overtones but also a kernel of truth. I wonder if this is how people felt when rock took over.
Last year I had a big joint birthday bash with two of my friends and we made a big playlist of 80s, 90s, electro, Charli XCX, etc. Within an hour people had literally unplugged our computer and put on reggaeton. I was pissed but a wise friend said “if there’s no reggaeton, people won’t have sex.”
Any club, any party, any bar, it’s just an indistinguishable dunka-dunka hour after hour. Even worse in Colombia. And in a country that has proud traditions of rock, cuarteto, tango music, etc, it feels like an inadvertent form of erasure.
The thing with reggaeton is that I’d probably like it more if I only heard it once in a while. But it has utterly conquered South America in a way that has made it effectively a musical monoculture.
