It's honestly been life changing in terms of being able to hang up coils of wire that I regularly use but don't want cluttering a surface or forgetting that they exist because they're in a bag of cables

I was made to scry through the entrails of dead machines not fight transphobes tbh.

I'm the person who gets to spend my Friday morning in court finding this stuff out btw.

My current main workplace which I would maybe feel ashamed of the state of it I were capable of feeling shame but I'm not.

Cursed to have the type of brain that finds mess overwhelming and also for the exact same reason do a job where everything around me is wires everywhere.

Gosh if only someone had loudly warned about how an entire popular "left" influencer scene was a pipeline to the far right.

I'm sure if that person had existed she definitely would not have faced a year of misogynistic harassment and ridicule from much of the rest of the online left.

I managed to talk my way into an experimental power station/laboratory once and I'm not extremely good at lying, I just got to know enough industry jargon and look like I have a purpose in the right way.

It's practice. I'm not exactly a good liar in a general sense but the reason it's called social engineering is that people who do a lot of it get to learn what policy/process barriers tend to look like, what motivates people how to bypass those barriers & how to navigate actually existing process.

Even this side of the beliefs around it is out of date though.

This is why almost every lanyard has an anti-choke clasp built in these days. I've worked on shop floors at vehicle manufacturers where we all had lanyards on everywhere we go alongside steel toe shoes.

It's a good gig if you can get it. I haven't broken into a building in a while my main job is taking apart electronics.

I've seen plenty

It can be more specifically "I'm here to check your plumbing", "I'm delivering mail", whatever but like. In general everyone understands that lanyard means "I'm here to do a job".

The stolen lanyards generally are long disabled for doors etc. For pentesters they serve a purely symbolic purpose to communicate a particular status to other people and that status isn't "I'm part of a social elite".

It's "I am meant to be here, I'm a pawn like everyone else, nothing to see here".

There are (physical) penetration testers who break into buildings for a living who amass personal collections of stolen lanyards.

The fact they do this so they can impersonate numerous different types of workers so they can infiltrate buildings feels like it's pretty obvious what they symbolise.

1) high-fructose corn syrup is not useful, it's a profit-driven substance that has wrecked our bodies (asymmetrically)

2) humans are not "question machines", or indeed machines

3) genAI is not an "answer machine", it's a Magic 8-ball frequency algorithm

Framing matters. Language matters.

The 'lanyard class' basically goes back to the basic failure to consider the minimum wage barista in starbucks as a worker.

Class politics but you're only working class if retired and living in a suburban bungalow.
