Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads: The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same... - Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist
Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.

Thank you for playing Horsey Game! Updates will continue to roll in
horsey game is peak
Aw thanks!! I was thinking about doing that and throwing it up on bandcamp yeah! Dunno when Iβll get around to it. Itβll be a weird one since most of the tracks will be 20s loops heh
ok so Discord is actively enshittifying. where to next then? back to email?
Omg Northernlion streamed Horsey Game!! So cool to see something you've worked on being enjoyed
Congrats to @manbearcar.bsky.social on making a heck of a game!! ππ
sometimes you gotta bet on a horse cause of it's name ya know?

Here's a YouTube upload for the Horsey Game trailer!
The idea for the VO came to me in the shower and it was almost entirely written and recorded before I was dry

clip clop over to the steam shop n lasso a copy into your game barn today!!
Justin somehow let me do sound n music stuff for this game. my first time! I'm sure people will have opinions on it, but it was a blast π
My 2nd and latest experiment with daily driving Linux has ended and i'm sad π
I edited the entire Horsey Game trailer in Kdenlive on Linux and it was...fine? They gotta fix the keyframing workflow yikes
Once Win-only apps can be run as easily as games on Steam Proton, I'll be back
Digging this new moogenics game
Yeah thatβs what I was wondering too! I havenβt dug much into shader stuff yet
Any #godot folks out there ever done seamless screen wrapping?
Basic screen wrap is fairly easy, just snap an object when itβs offscreen. But if a sprite is halfway off screen right, how do you get the other half to show on screen left?
May the HORSE be with you π
I did the trailer and sfx for this game. Go wishlist it, NEIGH-bour!
I bring you Horsey Game

omg thank you @aftermath.site β€οΈ
Seriously can we just have companies that do the thing and make a good product rather than chase infinite growth and inevitably pump their app full of ads and AI?
May thy app ship and enshittify
that's totally reasonable and astute advice! but now that i'm on this open source path, i guess i'm proving a point or something lol wheee
and arg i switched to amd recently cause of a gpu deal. oh well
yah. i got it to work, but the mp4 restriction was too much. depending how things go i might just drop the $$$ to get studio version we'll see
OBS for capture, Kdenlive for editing, Reaper for audio seems to work just fine atm!
If I ever need to do anything fancier in the future, i might just drop the $500 for Davinci Resolve Studio, but I'm gonna try my hardest to see how far this goes π€
Linux Update: I found a open source video editor called Kdenlive that is quite good! kdenlive.org
It has a bit of that open source jank (especially with keyframing), but does a LOT of what I need and feels very Premiere-y. Even has a effects stack like After Effects
did a first pass on the trailer with kdenlive! very simple edit but it's promising! will post more about it soon
i so badly want to be out of the shackles of windows I'm gonna try to edit the Horsey Game trailer in entirely in Linux. wish me luck π€
A timeline visually representing the advice from my post, emphasising how dramatically and reliably having more time, with a testable build, converts to your game being better and your studio being safer.
I've been running an indie games studio for 15 years now, and it felt like a good time to boil down what I've learned into 4 pieces of advice:

I hope it's of use, not least because goddamn I forgot how long blog posts take to write.
