You don't have to trust anyone. But the failure to hold politicians accountable is the failure of the citizenry. There is only one knight in shining armor who can save democracy - the people. There's no 'authority' bigger than them.

It's hopeless once the citizenry develop political loyalties. Politicians will just use it to blunt the backlash when they do whatever they like. Accountability in a democracy requires the people to act like another political party looking out for their own interests, ready to drop anyone on a dime.

He's stressed out hard between his insecurities and the stubborn backlash from citizens and judiciary, not to mention his health. He doesn't have the mental faculties to do the complex political maneuvering that he's doing now. Those premeditated plans are being fed by others while stoking his ego.
He probably won't last that long. But don't make the mistake of believing that this is just about him. While he's petty and vindictive on his own, he's mostly just a puppet of a big group. His successors are going to be progressively worse than him.
