SO! Voice actors, don’t feel bad for “just” having VO experience. It is valid and you ARE an actor. And hey, if you want to give theater a try, go for it! It’s a ton of fun and you get to learn from your cast mates, which is experience you can bring back with you to your booth! ❤️
Just because the audience doesn’t see you or your body language doesn’t mean it isn’t acting. If anything, you have to work harder to make the emotion come through because the audience only has your voice to rely on.
In that way, theater is easier because you don’t need to rely so heavily on your imagination!
All that to say, voiceover experience DOES translate over to other types of acting, and it is not inferior in any way.
And I realized how helpful it has been for my theater experience. With VO, you have to rely on your imagination for everything: who you’re talking to, the scene, your character, etc. But in theater you have a scene partner, you have a set, and you have costumes and makeup.
I got cast in my first ever theater play (Shakespeare no less) and was given a speaking part. I was talking to a cast mate who has a degree in theater and has been performing in shows for 13 years. They were floored that this was my first show and said I was doing well. I told them I do VO.
I’ve seen plenty of people and casting directors in the acting community that view our voice acting experience as not real “acting” experience. Well, I’ve had zero stage experience - and I mean none. No choir, no Christmas plays, no theater in school. But I’ve done voice acting.
