So when you copy DE's interpretation of tabletop gameplay, you're not just iterating on some loose concept; You're wearing DE's skin. If you really respected how these mechanics relate to DE's narrative, you probably wouldn't do the same thing again with a new coat of paint.
Normally I try to be patient about people copying homework. I get it, when you're starting out it's hard to know what you really want from your own games. We've all been there.
But Disco's mechanics aren't isolated systems. They're interwoven into the very core of the game's story and personality.
This execution is significant because Harry's personality is scrambled, and everytime you roll you're collapsing the superposition of all the voices and pushing Harry to rebuild himself into something new. This perspective on RPG mechanics has a fundamental link to the story being told.
In most RPGs dice rolls are external. You roll to interact directly with the world.
In DE, you're not always rolling to act, many times you're rolling internally to understand things. Most of the game's rolls are Harry's mind trying to piece ideas and feelings together to reach new insights.
We do not need more games that PLAY like Disco. We need more games that are as WELL WRITTEN and THOUGHTFUL as Disco.
DE's mechanics are there to make the player feel that Harry is struggling to converge back to some fixed state, even if it's not the original Harry Dubois.
I'm very exhausted with the idea of disco-elysium-likes. The thing I cared about in DE was its narrative design and writing, not just its mechanics in isolation. You could explore all kinds of ideas from tabletop games and crpgs, but instead you choose to shamelessly pantomime what DE did?
Buddy. You're really putting me on blast here.π΄πΌ Guess I'm taking my hamster masseuse skills elsewhere.
Bluesky format crop of the poster/cover art I did for the physical edition of Norco! Has Kay on a motorcycle with Monkey. Mills and the orb are also here. The Norco industrial skyline silhouetted in the background with billowing golden hour clouds
A bluesky image crop of the fan art I did of Psycho Patrol R! Has the protagonist holding a 357 revolver and Mosin Nagant. His floating blue orb assistant next to him and his trusty mech behind.
A bluesky image crop of the fan art of Maschinen Krieger I did. The lone mech standing in a tide pool, clouds in the background
Bluesky image crop of the key art I did of PIGFACE. The protagonist, Exit, stands with baseball bat in hand. Her phone illuminating her face. An industrial skyline is silhouetted in the background with billowing clouds, seems like I've got a thing for that sort of environment lol.
