just thinking about how USAID was dismantled under the rationale of cost savings but there's an unlimited budget for war

When someone says βScientists do not want you to knowβ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They canβt shut up about what they found out and want you to know.
The impact is already hitting science agencies hard. The NIHβthe world's largest public biomedical research funderβhas had to rely on leftover stopgap funds.
New grant awards have slowed to a trickle β exacerbating the effects of a record-long shutdown in October.

This is a graph of the death of US science.

βWhat terrible news to wake up toβ is a sentence I wish felt rare
Columbia President with NEW details:
5 DHS agents entered a residency with no warrant.
They said they were police looking for a missing kid.
Security camera even captures them showing pictures of the "kid."
A campus officer asked for a warrant & their boss.
They ignored him & took the student.
Modified slide from microbial science presentation "Theory - Spontaneous Generation" "Until the early 19th century, people generally believed in the "Spontaneous Generation of life from non-living matter. Due to early experiments, this idea was disproved β’ Francisco Redi (1668) - Rotten Meat Experiment β’ Louis Pasteur (1864) - Curved Flask Experiment
Enlarged view of illustration; 3 beakers. Left beaker, uncorked, with red meat inside it. Caption "Before 'AI': ecosystem with juniors [maggots pictured] and seniors [flies]" Middle beaker, corked with "AI". Red meat, 3 flies near it: Caption "AI replaces 'junior' workers (?). Some seniors remain". Right beaker, corked with "AI". Red meat, all flies dead. Caption "Later..."
I am once again asking where they think senior engineers come from

Yet again, I (along with many others) want to remind us that THIS is what makes America exceptional. Our openness to immigrants, newcomers, and refugees has been our unique strength for many years...and it's a senseless own goal to walk away from it.
This thread shows a deliberate defunding of U.S. science, engineering, social science, innovation, and education excellence. Itβs a U.S. national security, competitiveness, and economic disaster.
Yes, the top-line budget numbers are (nearly) flat. I can assure you that does not mean that the state of science is sound. That is already a low bar for success. And, if last year is a guide, we should not expect that federal agencies will use $$$-s as intended:

We lined up for smallpox vaccines and were just grateful for the miracle of science and medicine.
Wow.
Calling it now: the US political media's treatment of AOC is going to make their treatment of Hillary Clinton or Al Gore look like a model of balance and discretion.
Stand up for science on March 7th!

If we donβt stand up no one will
We wanted to understand how mRNA vaccines work. So we talked to three cocaine addicts in a gas station bathroom off Route 6.
In his confirmation hearings, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told U.S. senators that he would not cut funding for vaccine research or change the nation's official vaccine recommendations. He did both. n.pr/46QDn9p
The cure for ignorance is not information. It's humility and curiosity.
Facts can be easily dismissed. What motivates people to gain insight is recognizing gaps in their understanding and wanting to find out more.
The root of lifelong learning is knowing how little we know.
Over on threads someone just use ai;dr and we all need to adopt that right quick
When I got the contract to write a history of concentration camps in 2014, I hoped to keep the US from ending up here. That didn't work out! But now it's critical to understand how much is already in process and the enormity of what's coming. The sooner we act to stop it, the more people we'll save.
I genuinely cannot believe the degree to which we are pissing away this generational breakthrough, even given the fuckmuppets who are involved www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

Holy shit: it's an RFP for the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology (PRFB). Hello old friend www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

Important info from @cato.org about how immigrants contribute to our country:
"The US immigrant population generated more in taxes than they received in benefits from all levels of government every year from 1994 to 2023."
Facts matter.
