Thank you! At an event last night I said "If the word hope doesn't work for you try, 'Never fucking surrender.'" The word hope seems too sunny to a lot of people, but the heart of it as I'm interested in it is: we make the future in the present, if we show up, and that never surrender part.

Isn't that always the way! The Reader is always many readers, each of them unique; their behavior in aggregate is seldom predictive of their individual experience. You can't write for all of them. So choose the ones your story's meant to touch, and write for them.

In my U.S. Civil Rights Movements class, we spend a lot of time thinking about historical memory. When movements get reduced to a few iconic leaders, the collective labor that made change possible disappears from view. It also obscures an important lesson: collective action is effective & difficult.

Probably a 2? I'm a spreadsheeter and an outliner; I make maps and charts; I have lists of names and iterative draft files and multiple backups that I take regularly. But I've seen the promised land of truly rigorous outlining and research indexing, and I aspire to be a 1.
If it helps, everything you've said so far about it makes me WILDLY excited to read it! Leaning into what the book does and why you love its weirdness has been super-effective. 💚
I think most of the people I've seen are interested in suffering for motivation, though--suffering that galvanizes people to change, rather than suffering that just Is.
I really appreciate your sharing that story! It's useful to get a look at your process, and to see the value in finding many ways to tell the same story. I'm so glad that her story's moving into the shape that you want, and I'm excited for the day I get to read it. 💚
If the character makes it, there will be new challenges to endure; if the character doesn't, well, that's a darn shame, but the world's going to keep going anyway. Endure, persist, advance, hold.
