the western press is truly, truly ill.
Portrait of Lise Meitner taken in 1928. She is smoking a cigarette and looking impatient to get back to her experiments.
Last week, I mentioned this in passing in a workshop:
In 1938 Enrico Fermi won a Nobel Prize for discovering two new elements of the periodic table.
Lise Meitner shortly showed that Fermi was mistaken and instead had produced known lighter elements by fission.
She did not win a Nobel prize.
99% of the species that have ever lived have gone extinct
I fear toxic, authoritarian, war-mongering men will be the ones to end the term of Homo sapiens sapiens

So what's the most interesting, or weirdest, application of hidden markov models (HMMs) that you've seen? I once built an HMM for sage grouse mating behavior, fit to data collected by a robotic grouse (pictured doi.org/10.1086/703518).
Looking for other examples for a new lecture on HMMs.
What?!
“We are fearful that this is a prototype for other studies,” said @cdelawalla.bsky.social. My latest on the unlikely researchers at the heart of US vaccine policy:

What do you want to bet this little tantrum on the WaPo's opinion page is because someone ahead of Professor Jakub Grygiel in the queue at some coffee shop had an elaborate coffee order and he hasn't been able to let it go ever since
Jeg har ikke tatt i bruk ChatGPT, og derfor kan jeg heller ikke avslutte bruken av det. Men det ser ut som et godt initiativ. #QuitGPT www.aftenposten.no/meninger/kro...
We’re now at a point where the Donald is happy if Iran removes the mines it may have placed in the Strait of Hormuz. Everything is going according to plan.
“Look, it’s not quite clear what’s happening, but there is at least some possibility that there are currently mines in the Strait of Hormuz” seems like exactly the sort of thing that’s going to make insurance companies chill out
Murphy: "Literally in my other ear I'm listening to Ted Cruz on another network explain why this mission is so essential to destroy the nuclear program. I may have to walk over there and tell him the admin is now briefing that getting rid of the nuclear program has nothing to do with this mission."
Dagens #dax18 fikk meg til å innse vi transfolk først og fremst er rekvisitter i en mediapolitikk, der polarisering er det primære mål.
Ta debatten! Hvorfor? For å finne fram til kompromiss og en felles plattform?

We shouldn’t need an exclusive report from one outlet’s sources to tell us how many of our troops are wounded. The Pentagon confirmed the number when confronted, but that’s too late: www.reuters.com/world/middle...
Yes! Box's words for statistical models apply to physiology as well.
"All models are wrong, but some are useful"
The bare minimum to qualify as a civilised country is the abolishment of capital punishment. It is utter barbarism.
Advantages and disadvantages of assessments of ventricularearterial coupling in the pressure-volume plane. Advantages Widely used, well-established framework Extensive published animal and human data Relatively simple and highly intuitive. Quantifies LV chamber contractility/stiffness and arterial load in the same units Characterizes mechanical indices that relate to energetics: External mechanical energy e Potential energy e Energetic efficiency Allows us to understand consequences of abnormalities in EA and EES on stroke volume, ejection fraction, pre-load pressure sensitivity, pressure lability, hypertension and some important aspects of cardiovascular reserve during exercise. Non-invasive methods can approximate the most important indices. Disadvantages Disadvantages of EA: EA is not a pure index of arterial load because it is prominently influenced by heart rate EA is mostly dependent on resistance and is relatively insensitive to changes in pulsatile load EA is not a measure of arterial stiffness or total arterial compliance Its derivation did not account for wave reflection or transmission. Disadvantages of EES: Non-linearity of the ESPVR EES demonstrates afterload sensitivity EES demonstrates some preload dependency It does not assess myocardial properties Disadvantages in the assessment of ventricular-arterial coupling: EA/EES does not characterize (and totally neglects) the LV loading sequence EA/EES and the “mechanical” energetic optimization in the PV plane has unclear relevance in the absence of severe disease Stroke work does not dissect the importance of systolic pressure vs. flow output. This approach considers stroke work the only “useful” energy (neglects the value of potential energy deposition in the myocardium that favors diastolic suction). The entire paradigm centers of stroke work as “the” variable to be optimized. Yet, stroke work is a limited index of performance and optimization of other factors likely supersede optimization of stroke work…
Here's another great paper, a critical review of Ea/Ees link.springer.com/article/10.1...
My pleasure! I was really into those methods once, but was disillusioned once I found papers like that.
I've never seen it used outside of research.
I definitely believe in indiviualising care and finding out the hemodynamic state of each patient at each moment. It's what I find so rewarding in critical care echocardiography. I do think ejection fraction is undervalued, as a measure of ventriculoarterial coupling.
