Vibe coding broke people's brains because they had a bad understanding of the software design process.

The pop culture model goes something like this: start out with a sketch and then render that same idea in progressively finer detail.

So when tools could "skip" to high detail, people went WOW.

But when our hand is away from the stove, it will get better, right? The stove is the problem, so we just have to get rid of the stove and everything will go back to normal and our hand will look just like it did before we touched the stove. There will be consequences for the stove, but not for us.

Well, you’d be surprised how many people actually do entertain that idea, or at least act like they do. But that’s not really the point. You don’t need to explicitly adopt that belief for it to lead you toward a wild overestimation of its capabilities.

I don’t care if he’s weird, either. I do care if millions of people think the product they’re integrating into their daily lives has the level of capability that this advertising implies (and let’s not pretend that interviews like this aren’t also advertisements). I think he should know better.

The CEO of a major, widely-used software service is telling the public that it might be alive and have feelings. That’s not uncommon talk from these guys and it clearly distorts how people understand, perceive and use the product.

Yes, and the next sentence is “but we’re open to the idea that it could be.” And then he goes on to describe how they added a metaphorical "quit" button to let the AI terminate a task that it finds upsetting or immoral.

This is not normal stuff.

This kind of talk is neither a good-faith opinion nor responsible behavior from the people in charge of the technology.

My touchstone for understanding conservatism has long been that the notion of “real Americans” implies that everyone else is an “unreal American.” So this makes perfect sense, because MAGA both takes that idea literally and follows it to its maximal conclusion.

Yeah I don’t know what consciousness is but if it fits into a 200-line file on GitHub, I think it is probably not consciousness. karpathy.github.io/2026/02/12/m...

One of my pet theories here is that a bunch of bullshit job candidates are jobs that don’t need to be done 99% of the time, but you don’t know which 1% of the time they *do* need to be done, so you do them 100% of the time.

As someone who truly loved Firefly I have a lot of trouble picturing a good outcome to this and an almost effortless time picturing bad ones.

A screenshotted quote: “She had this magic syringe, she would take this drug and if she were, for instance, raped, the rapist would die a horrible death. The story was, she gets kidnapped by Reavers. and when Mal finally got to the ship to save her from the Reavers, he gets on the Reaver ship and all the Reavers are dead. Which would suggest a kind of really bad assault. At the end of the episode, he comes in after she’s been horribly brutalized, he comes in, he gets down on his knee and he takes her hand and he treats her like a lady.”

There’s more detail that’s even worse, to the point that I’m putting this behind a content warning.

Feeling this way about an increasingly complete set of everything I’ve been a fan of in my life:

- I loved it.
- It was really special and I was sad when it went away.
- No, I do not want more.

“But the AI made a mistake—” No. You made a mistake. You are responsible for your tools and how you use them. Guns don’t kill people, indeed.

Also: technology survives when it’s a means to an end! When you’re pushing the technology itself (to people who aren’t technologists), that’s when you know you’re in trouble. Nobody wanted “asbestos,” they just wanted “my house to be warm in winter.”

This is a good analogy. Very useful in carefully controlled settings for specific usages, but unfortunately being widely inserted into everything and used without training or PPE and poisoning a lot of things and people and we’re going to pay a tonne of money to remove it safely in the future

Understanding cause and effect (if I hit the snooze button then I’ll get more sleep) and second order thinking (but then I’ll be late for work) are the basics of being an intelligent person.

Unfortunately we decided to elect the dumbest and most spiteful people we could find to the highest offices.

I don’t know how it works at every fertility clinic, but typically they are incredibly serious about respecting parents’ wishes regarding unused embryos, including indefinite frozen storage, donation, etc. You fill out detailed forms that address multiple scenarios.

Without being glib, I don’t know how we assess victory conditions when no one in civilian or military leadership has any clear idea of their goals?

Worth noting that—based on the evidence submitted, anyway—it’s not even clear which country’s armed forces were responsible, and consequently which legal code would apply.

But negligence is not the same thing as knowingly giving, or following, an illegal order.
