Curious and generous. I believe we need entrepreneurs and innovation to face the challenges of this world, but I am not a techno-optimist. Pragmatic optimist? LANG=FR @sylvain.social Professional (serious?) profile at www.linkedin.com/in/sylvaincarle

Sad to have lost Omnivore to save pages and build my personal knowledge archive. Back to Pocket App. It's stable and sturdy but has not been updated in a while...
Still can't edit the title or summary of the saved page. And auto-tagging from AI summary of content, please? Aren't we in 2025?
From a comment I made in a small group of friends, reading the constant stream of #facepalm news in the recent weeks.
When every news article looks like a parody. When the real world is worse than in dystopian movies...
Link of the day, timely topic if there is one: What DeepSeek means for energy (and climate).

Social network tip of the day: find someone you respect and that you find insightful, someone you love to read and who inspires you. Check the ratio of followers vs following, and if they only follow a handful of accounts, check that list, cherrypick 5 to 10, and start following them. Voilà!
Would be curious to see the results of a poll like this one in Canada... I'm not sure we would have the same results (although I hope for it and would be happy to be surprised).
The economic situation in Canada is different with Big Oil being one of our largest industry & the most active lobbyists.
Sad to miss this! lu.ma/01jbzdiz
Hope it will be recorded, @bmann.ca do you know?
My question is more about where to publish open science papers vs the traditional incumbent model. Maybe the answer is easy, and I should just google it, but I am trying the network to get opinionated answers.
I met a scientist/founder at #CDL who is working on an innovative approach to sea-based carbon capture. Best place for them to publish a white paper describing their approach and get comments and reviews?
Open science approach, free publication, not pay to play. Where are these online communities?
Setting up your domain name as your Bluesky handle on Wordpress.com is a piece of cake. Done!

FYI, a simple estimation, my bluesky API skills are not up to par yet.
When your idea for a fun thing to share on the network is so common that a simple search returns thousands of results!

Quote from The New Capitalist Manifesto book: "Twentieth-century capitalism’s cornerstones shift costs to and borrow benefits from people, communities, society, the natural world, or future generations. Both cost shifting and benefit borrowing are forms of economic harm that are unfair, nonconsensual, and often irreversible." - Umair Haque
I should probably re-read The New Capitalist Manifesto by @umairh.bsky.social. This quote popped up in my @readwise.bsky.social app this morning. Pretty sure 21st-century capitalism is not (yet?) much better...

My real superpower is context-switching.
Book cover with the quote: The idea that people are always more important than institutions is fundamental to creating a healthy startup community.

From Brad Field in the book Startup Communities.
Idea of the day (easy). A new AtProto meetup in Montréal.
@beaudoin.social I am sure you could help? Who else?
I miss this kind of conversation from the "old days" of the Internet. It never disappeared, but it has been more challenging to discover in recent years. I'm glad to find it here! I love these public forums where we can share semi-formed thoughts, questions, findings, roadblocks, and hacks. #OpenFTW

This will make a few of my old #geolocal #nerds friends smile. It's cool to see this legacy continue.

Quote from The Catalyst by Jonah Berger. www.goodreads.com/book/show/50..., one of my favourite recent reads.
"To reduce reactance, catalysts allow for agency, not by telling people what to do or by being completely hands-off, but by finding the middle ground. By guiding their path. Four key ways to do that are: (1) Provide a menu, (2) ask, don’t tell, (3) highlight a gap, and (4) start with understanding."
Pour ceux et celles qui veulent suivre mon compte en français, vous pouvez le trouver à @sylvaincarle.bsky.social.
This account will mostly be in English from now on, carrying over the same pattern I had deployed on other social networks. Not a perfect setup, but probably better for readers.

Just started using @openvibe and wow, this sure feels like a winner for the age of the #fediverse! Wish I could have multiple mastodon accounts and my legacy twitter accounts in there too...
Is is just me or is it a huge missed opportunity that there is no messaging API for LinkedIn? Seems so obvious.
