This is clearly a frequent problem, making even the simple matter of staying in a hotel room a dangerous situation for women. And, of course, it is unsettling to think so many men consider rape worth doing, no doubt due to the low conviction rates.
The refund is a particular kick in the teeth, as it sounds insensitive. But, since I tried going to the BBC news app to find the specific story, expecting it to be the top story. What horrifies me is just how many “rape in hotel room” stories come up.
This morning, while watching breakfast to, I saw a story about a woman who was raped in her hotel room after her rapist conned staff into giving him a room key. If this isn’t shocking enough, she was offered a £30 refund by staff at the Travel Lodge hotel.
Other colours too - if you’ve seen his neck and his hand.
