Let me have books about me that are fat. Tout passe, tout lasse, tout casse. Life is a shipwreck, but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats.

This episode is about Father Mapple's sermon on the book / parable of Jonah. Here's the sermon (greatly abridged), delivered in proper scenery-chewing fashion by Orson Welles in John Huston's 1956 film: youtu.be/9DAQ8Az5Gpc

So Philip Glass just joined TikTok. He only has like 4 posts and they’re simply him in what I assume is his living room playing the piano. First comment on one I saw was “your piano is too close to the fireplace, you’ll dry it out” and if that’s not the internet in a nutshell I don’t know what is.

Radium was the analogy I heard. Useful for watchdials, it was pushed into consumer products such as cosmetics and energy drinks before its dangers were understood. It's now restricted to a couple of specialised uses.

Indeed a land of contrasts. But in an increasingly changeable world, can Britain learn to adapt? There are lessons here for us all.

I asked a BBC acquaintance years ago, "But didn't he have a brain tumour which severely affected his personality and caused him to behave badly later in life?"

"No, he didn't need any help at all with being an arsehole."

Same here, it was never mentioned. I had a child's illustrated Bible which had to have *something* about Revelations, but as I recall it was about as specific on the details as the last paragraph of the Narnia books.

Once again I am duty bound to point out that in 15 years of living in the US working in media I never once heard a single person, media outlet, consumer, or rando in the bar use the term 'Special Relationship'. It's the "I have a girlfriend but she goes to another school" of international relations.
