The wedding was perfect. π₯° It was so, so good to celebrate the love that I watched blossom and bloom. I gave a little speech as is the custom in Aotearoa. I feel very much at home here.
We were getting dressed to go to a wedding when the call came. My partner's Uncle passed away. What a jumble of feels.
Less than 2 weeks ago we went to the big smoke to see him, knowing time was short. "How are the renos going, mate." He said to me.
The sun is now out. The wedding will be perfect.

I'm just annoyed that I feel like all the knowledge and the technology we have means we could all be having a really nice time and scientists could be doing science and everyone could have enough food and shelter and everything they need but instead *gestures at everything*

OMG that's war torn country level lack of resources. That's heinous for people's quality of life & survival.
I've been having this conversation with friends and family for at least a year. America and our relationship with the world is about to be fundamentally changed, and I don't think most (white) Americans are going to be ready to not be centered the way we were before.
This was certainly the case in early 2020. Individuals and small groups stepped up - often in spite of "senior leadership". Without their actions, we would have been seriously stuffed. Six years on, they are forgotten. As forgotten as the "essential workers" who got us through when we needed them.

Imagine having a disease that severely limits your quality of life but no one has heard of it, you can't work or get a benefit, and any help you get at the doctor involves hours of background research and advocating for yourself.

Reminder: bioRxiv's "no reviews/hypotheses" policy is something we had from the outset, because it would require subjective judgments akin to peer review (and rapid dissemination seemed less critical for this type of article). The ease of generating these with LLMs make me glad we have it. 2/n

Left wing politicians need to offer hope, material improvement and a reason to vote for, not just against to voters. They must also master the art of saying "get a load of this fucken guy" about their right wing opponents, many of whom fail to pass the uncanny valley test.
Another 86 (!) scientists gone. These were voluntary redundancies, but very hard to not assume it's because they find it hard to see a future for their work in the current AoNZ science system.
We're filling the gap that was once a pillar of the previous science reform. What happened to it?
