Shonichi, finally!
@clebsaints
A good time band in a bad time world. New album -THIS IS BS TOO- voted "Best Local Album of 2024" by Cleveland Scene magazine readers- "Best of CLE" poll. You don't have to like us, for us to like you. From Cleveland, OH USA, Skeets by bassist Shaggo.
Shonichi, finally!
Thank you kindly. We were very much lucky to have been able to see Hakuho fight. He was 1 of 1, truly; + trying to measure others against him is a hopeless task. Yet even he had terrible basho, going kyujo early bc of nagging injuries. People's memories are selective, even about him.
We all have days like this; but these are the ones that lead to getting better most.
The guy is kinda having a heyday, down in a county south of us in Ohio. Portage County, where Kent State University is. Been like 6 sightings in the last week.
Edit-Updated F1 on TSN5, it's been a tough week at work
Tune In Alert: Early start this weekend. F1 in China, IndyCar debuts in Arlington & NASCAR is in Las Vegas. Rev has Trans Am from Road Atlanta & Indy NXT in Arlington
Note the NASCAR Cup series race this weekend looks like it's only on TSN+
Until the Browns OL profoundly improves, + tangibly shows it in game situations, they're gonna need a more mobile QB than Cousins has ever been in his life. Even with a good running game, Cousins would get wrecked very quickly.
Fujinokawa is one of the most exciting guys to come up this year. Even if he eventually plateaus, like other guys his size do; that kinboshi is gonna stand proof of his massive potential.
Kyffin Simpson's Sunoco-branded Indycar; royal-blue with bright-yellow accents and the gold number "8"; top view on black background.
For me, it's Kyffin Simpson's "Sunoco" livery for Ganassi in Indycar. It just looks exactly like a race car you'd get in a "Hot Wheels" set.
"We do NOT lay any claim to Pit Stain McGee." - Cleveland, OH official statement.
He's from a prosperous suburb called Westlake, not from Cleveland.
Big difference.
That's cool as hell, tho. Infinitely better than losing that site to a strip-mall or something.
Thanks! Just had to get that off my chest. The beauty of being a sumo fan is, you can enjoy it knowing absolutely nothing about it just as much as you can knowing a lot about it. And the learning never stops, + is always fun.
Tl;dr- point is: the emphasis on a "kinboshi" win as a Yokozuna's failure is sorely misplaced; when in fact it's a life-changing win for the guy who gets it. That's the real story; + those who focus otherwise are playing into the worst stereotypes about sumo.
-rant over-.
Onosato, the young Yokozuna being discussed in the OP article, is still new at the rank and suffering from a lingering shoulder injury. Every one of his opponents knows that, + knows they may not get a better chance to get that lucrative win once he's healthy again. So they redouble their efforts.
No Yokozuna in all of sumo history has ever really been "unbeatable". Even the GOAT of the modern era, the 69th Yokozuna Hakuho, with more wins than anyone ever, frequently lost between 1 and 4 bouts in a tournament. Not bc he wanted to, but bc his opponents were immensely more motivated to win.
Upper-ranking men, in what's called "san'yaku", don't get kinboshi money for beating the Yokozuna. But getting that win is a big step towards winning a tournament outright (which also carries a permanent pay rise),+ getting promoted into a position to one day become a Yokozuna.
So they want it too
If a 21-year-old maegashira 10 gets a "kinboshi" in his third tournament ever, + he is still wrestling 17 years later, he is still getting paid better in his 80th tournament because of that win in his third one. So he's gonna be super-motivated to get that win.
If he beats the Yokozuna, not only does he get that huge stack of envelopes, but he gets a "kinboshi", a "Gold Star Victory"; that means a substantial payment on top of that directly from the Sumo Association, but it raises his compensation in *every tournament he fights in* the rest of his career.
An ordinary rank-and-file wrestler in the top division of sumo (a "maegashira") may get only 1 or 2 chances per year to fight a Yokozuna (Grand Champion), the very top rank of the sport. The prize-money in the envelopes (kensho) is exponentially larger than in any other bout he'll fight.
Much as I (shags, bass guy) love sumo; one thing about sumo journalism continues to irritate me: the habit of casting situations like the below one as one man's failure, rather than another's success. A brief explain, in the following skeets:โฌ๏ธ
That last part. Exactly.
This weekend's race lineup ๐. Really nice to have it all in one place, so I don't have to guess or run around searching each series' schedule.
A big, yet subtle, sports W for blueski.
Glad Sephora saw the "coolness-potential" of sponsoring a race car.
Lol. It's a pretty badass look, tho; reminiscent of the F1 Cadillac livery.
Depends on how well the top is cross-braced, one would imagine.
Hate to be Hosh's opponent tomorrow...๐ ๐ ๐ฅ
