So....can we talk about Systems Engineering as a discipline now?

BREAKING: We're suing Kansas for a law that invalidates transgender people's updated driver's licenses and authorizes anyone to sue anyone they suspect of being trans for using the "wrong" bathroom.
It might be lacking...but it absolutely can do what Gemini is saying it's unable to do. I think this is the result of "put AI everywhere" mandates vs actually seeing how it'd be useful.
It seems like that's been multiplied now because it's quick, easy, and asynchronous. I literally don't care how sloppy it is because it's narrow in scope and infinitely better than *nothing*.
My favorite use of AI? Making tooling. I've always seen myself as a tool maker. That quick and dirty CLI to drive your API had always paid off in ways I never expected -- and it doesn't need to be precious or "production quality".

Temperature graph. Current temp is 64.5
I'm pretty happy with these IKEA matter sensors. I'm looking forward to not changing batteries, and having accurate data!
"enterprise" SSO is still a monumental shitshow. (said as I'm trying to recover access to a service after a SAML cert expired)
NY Times on "AI Washing."
The situation is changing rapidly, but I think this is an accurate assessment of where we are today.

I would love it if random Democrats would stop texting me from random numbers. I want off whatever list(s) they're working from. Seriously. Makes me not want to contribute.
I bought these books when I first read the story about his firing, and my son LOVED them.

A bit of an aside, but I had a really interesting conversation with one of my frontend-focused engineers about their bottlenecks. Agency and UX review. Phrased differently "do they want this change" and "does it look/feel right".
When I say that we don't need School Resource Officers in elementary schools arresting 5-year-old Black boys, understand what that means in practice.
This isn't sadder when it happens to kids that aren't Black.
Everybody at ICE is a broken human.

Yeah, I'd be pretty furious if I got spam email from some "AI agent" thanking me for my contributions too
I dug into what happened here, turns out it's an experiment called "AI Village" which unleashes all sorts of other junk emails on the world: simonwillison.net/2025/Dec/26/...
"A swift water rescue specialist from Texas can use a boat and lifesaving equipment that belongs to a team from Nebraska."
And this is why we want a competent federal government.
Fond memories of representing @uwcse.bsky.social at ICPC Worlds back in...ahem...2000.
A screenshot of a Facebook post where a person named Andy ask the Well now βWhat the hell is transgender?β The Royal Canadian Air Force account response with βThatβs a pretty big question asked in a pretty small way, Andy. βTransgenderβ putting describes someone whose gender β who they know themselves to be β doesnβt match the sex they were assigned at birth. Itβs not new, and itβs certainly not a fad. People have lived this experience for as long as people have existed; weβre just finally talking about it openly. You donβt have to fully understand it right away, most learning takes time, but we can always start from a place of respect. Thatβs how decent folks handle things theyβre still getting used to.β
Massive shoutout out to whoever handles the Royal Canadian Air Forceβs social media account. They responded to every single comment on their already very solid Trans Day of Remembrance post and they responded like thisβ¦
Poll crosstable for the question: Who is more responsible for current economic conditions: President Trump or former President Biden? Total: 64/31 White: 61/33 Black: 71/24 Hispanic: 63/30 Non-White: 67/28
Definitely still a big difference, but better than I was expecting.

This tragedy is hitting extra hard.
I hiked/ran this section Feb 7th.
We happened to have amazing weather with zero wind. The day before had seen 50mph -- but not much snow.

My husband called out a salesman when we were buying our Honda Element. "Wait, we're buying a HONDA." He laughed, agreed, and moved on.

Orange clouds of sunrise. They're wavey. Trees and a lone bird on the left
Morning, y'all.
Just placed my deposit for 7 days of running hut to hut in the Julian Alps. See you in July, Slovenia!
A decade ago, my husband and I went on a bike trip in Slovenia and Croatia. While I was a trail runner then, I'm not sure I had any idea what fun adventures I'd be tackling 10 years later.
Edwardian butt-plug. Certain leaders today should look into this decidedly no-nonsense design.
Earlier this year, I visited Chile. Santiago's Museum of Memory & Human Rights tells a similar story.
Insanely powerful.
