Car culture dominating society is social murder. Posts are mostly about the US, sometimes focused on parenting. sometimes writing more at https://politicsofcars.beehiiv.com/

Many. The end of the first post was explicit that "the least new vehicle buyers can do is avoid ICE". A new internal combustion vehicle is going to be around for a decade give or take, and it's absurd to think prices won't fluctuate more than 80 cents. We have far larger differences between states.

More and more people are saying it

I realize this isn't the language people normally use for gas. I'm mostly juxtaposing the reaction to this increase with posters here who insist over time that transit is, with varying hyperbolic adverbs, cheap versus driving in America.

07.03.2026 02:05 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yes. Or if a luxury beach house with massively subsidized flood insurance gets slightly less of a subsidy, the premium can go up 30%. In this case there's no reduction of subsidies - if anything the government has already indicated it may ease sanctions on Russian oil to help gas buyers.

Highlighting inequities for specific riders is good even if solving them would mean imagining having more power rather than optimizing Caltrain.

Electorally, valuing children over riders with income and a vote who want better transit might increase electoral pressure for transit funding, idk though

I certainly agree transit agencies should stop subsidizing parking. Use that land for either paid parking or other uses to maximize revenue for the system.

Mostly I find the framing limited. Given low transit funding and large driving subsidies, there will be many glaring inequities for riders.

The average new vehicle MPG is 27.2. Yes I think 80 more cents to drive 27 miles, possibly split between multiple passengers, is slightly more expensive. Especially when transit riders regularly pay multiple dollars to go a few miles.

07.03.2026 01:06 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

than mostly a matter of the US subsidizing driving over everything else, then we can optimize bike policies to help more people get on the train.

People keep misapplying lessons from foreign transit systems while ignoring the role of cars in their footprints (eg fares)

07.03.2026 01:03 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And the causality goes the other direction. Banning cargo bikes is not going to help more people mode shift from cars to bikes and trains.

After we have Dutch car regulations and street design, and build so much transit that fitting everyone with their bikes at peak times is a hard limit rather

I support more Thneed based political and economic analysis of the US, with a dash of Star-Off and Star-On Machine racism.

That's such a good preview picture. Safe biking infrastructure is cheap, just add bollards!

Alternative Fuels Data Center: Maps and Data - Share of All U.S. Vehicle Trips by Length (miles)

Most car trips are less than 6 miles, and cars can carry passengers. We're still a long way from gas costs making it cheaper to pay transit fares, even where transit is available and not insultingly slow (often because of drivers causing traffic)

Gas is up slightly versus last month. The extra money is going to the oil industry. Likely some state, if not federal, gas taxes will be waived.

If this is enough for drivers to whine, without extra taxes to offset negative externalities, the least new vehicle buyers can do is avoid ICE.

There's no need to wait for the tickets.

Those cameras or any ALPRs could identify fraudulently registered and fraudulently insured cars, absent fines, and rumors online that this use has already begun.

I think you mean this rhetorically and I agree, but to take it earnestly.

Make it a federal housing authority. No?

my understanding is that dashcams became popular in Russia to provide evidence in case of crashes

relatedly, I think bicyclists and pedestrians in America should always be recording around drivers

I heard it, and given my location hundreds if not thousands of people at home heard a car racing just now.

And all of us assume there will be no enforcement. ~Nobody else will complain to the city about this mentally unstable person acting anti-socially and dangerously.

what a savage burn against the Democratic party.

The sorts of guys who'd rather buy an expensive giant truck just to threaten others in public, instead of going to therapy, are never going to break for Dems. What a stupid idea to encourage them.

Why not raise parking fees every model year when the cars are improved?

06.03.2026 00:01 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

yes although I think license plates should be secondary to RFID (like ezpass) if not cell connections embedded in the vehicle. We have the technology to track lethal heavy machinery as rigorously as we track transit passengers.

Cars with tinted windows should be confiscated and held until drivers complete a safety course of walking and riding bikes, to teach them how dangerous it is for drivers to hide

Congrats to Rep. @katiejonesmpls.bsky.social and family, who biked to the hospital last week and came back with baby Hans. Here's what she told me about the ride:
