Cropped digital illustration by inkythoughts art for the We've Always Been Here Zine that both are credited on the bottom right corner as a watermark.
The foreground shows a vase with white lilies, symbolising lesbians in East-Asia, standing on a small table that also holds a binyeo (hair pin) and garakji (two rings), both signs of married women in the Joseon period. The midground features a married couple in Joseon-era hanbok with the wife leaning down to kiss her partner on the cheek, cradling their head tenderly. Her partner is dressed in men's clothing and hairdo with a light pink and blue colour scheme in reference to the trans flag while she is in women's attire in yellow and red, referencing the lesbian flag. They sit in front of a cosmetics chest with a mirror that shows two both in women's attire embracing each other and the leaning wife still happily kissing the other on the cheek. The chest stands in front of an open window showing the silhouette of trees against a sunset sky.

Two panels out of a comic page in inks. The first panels shows a street in a nyc neighborhood with cars and people, buildings, cables, street signs, and many details.
The second panel showing the main character Aran walking up to a bodega. Again a detailed building shot with bodega items in the window, poles and cables in front, windows with acs.

A mock stamp set of two lovers, a butch with short brown hair and a trans woman with longer grey hair, each in their own individual stamps but reaching out to touch each other across the gap.

Overall, the broken borders show how queer people have always pushed the boundaries of the world around them. The colors blend purple and the lesbian and gay flags, faded to evoke a sense of nostalgia.

(These adorable characters are two lovers: a butch and a trans woman, named H. and Imogene!)

Language is symbolic too. The terms "Tribade" and "Uranian" are now-outdated terms for lesbians and homosexuals. (Perfect for a queer history zine!)

The sea as a poetic symbol is also present, highlighting the rich history of queerness at sea.

All of these flower stickers are queer symbols.

Violets have symbolized lesbian love for thousands of years. Green carnations were a gay gesture and symbol of resistance. Lavender is symbol of the queer empowerment from 1969 and on. Pansies (once a slur) reclaimed as a symbol of pride and beauty.

This stamp nods to queerness in the 1800s: The cup of "Ladies of Llangollen," Oscar Wilde's carnation, and a book on whalers.Β

"Dividit lux et se" ("Daylight divides them and...") is the last verse of an incomplete sapphic love poem found in Pompeii. Lesbian love, since time immemorial.

being bisexual myself I always weight what I say where bc it did lead to some unpleasant consequences in the past. generally, I'm out, but even that depends on context & safety

yet I know that we know in our hearts what is true, even if we have to wear a mask to stay safe. much love & strength

Queer lives have changed and shifted in and out of the public eye of their cultures throughout all of history.
With my piece I wanted to show that some were (and still are!) hiding, but that doesn't make them any less valid or reduces their queer joy however private it might be.

A blue graphic with gold decorations and white text. At the top is a quote from Sappho that reads, "Someone will remember us, I say, even in another time." A small banner announces "Live on Kickstarter!" Then the rest of the text reads:

In a time of global queer erasure and persecution, the β€˜We’ve Always Been Here’ zine holds a special purpose: to remind us that no matter what conservative voices and fascist governments say, we have always existed.

We are not new. We may be bold, but we are ancient too.

When the world acknowledges that we’ve always been here, it becomes proof they will never get rid of us. No matter how they try to isolate, censor, or target usβ€”we persist.

This zine celebrates that resilience.

Another graphic with white text on a blue background, with gold decorations in the corners. The text reads:

Our artists have painted illustrations of queer joy around the world, from ancient times through the 1980s. It shows we’ll never be erased.

We also recognize that queer people of color are even more underrepresented, so we made sure that this zine wasn’t just inclusive, but centered around POC.

Our cover makes this clear with a beautiful β€˜own voices’ piece celebrating Indigenous MΓ©tis culture, followed by a majority of the book’s 50+ illustrations representing people of color as well.

We refuse to let colonization wipe away our queer history. We refuse to let fascists win.

Art, especially print media, is a stand against censorship and erasure, and it’s our hope that this book reaches those who need it most right now. We encourage you to check out the project on Kickstarter, and maybe even get two copies, to gift this hope to someone else too!

Come join us in protecting and amplifying global queer history.
