Save Prop I and Affordable Housing Funds On Wednesday February 25, billionaire Mayor Daniel Lurie and Supervisor Bilal Mahmood announced a tax cut for wealthy real estate investors. They propose to repeal 2020's Proposition I, which has…

Mayor Lurie and Supervisor Mahmood's β€œBUILD Act” would repeal a tax on rich real estate investors that has raised over $500m for housing working-class San Franciscans can afford.

Billionaires Attack Rent Control

GrowSF, a group funded by billionaires yet claiming to speak for the working class, released an attack ad on Monday targeting the four Supervisors who voted against the Mayor's Family Zoning Plan. As written, this plan threatens to demolish existing rent-controlled units, while failing to invest in the deeply affordable housing we need.

SF Standard headline: Moderate political group attacks supervisors who voted against Lurie’s upzoning plan

Tireless organizing by tenants, supported by DSA SF and Supervisor Jackie Fielder, succeeded in exempting many rent controlled units - but the Mayor's plan still leaves up to 20,000 units vulnerable to demolition, placing a target on the backs of working families.

We commend DSA SF member Supervisor Jackie Fielder and her colleagues - Supervisors Chan, Chen, and Walton - for voting against this proposal, and we urge the Board to put forward a plan that centers housing for working families, not profits for real estate developers.

DSA SF and our allies will continue to fight against the displacement of tenants, and for real solutions to the affordability crisis like social housing, which San Franciscans voted for in 2020’s Prop I and which Mayor Lurie and his wealthy backers continue to ignore.

San Franciscans deserve housing security, not displacement. The Mayor’s Family Zoning Plan still leaves more than 20,000 rent-controlled homes vulnerable to demolition. Thank you to Supervisors Fielder, Chan, Chen, and Walton for standing with tenants and working families.

Clipper 2 is a huge deal from a fare equity perspective. Transfer agencies on your ride? You won't pay the base fare twice anymore! That's $100+ back to daily commuters every month.

If someone's response to an effort to fund social housing is to complain about how a ballot campaign was run 5 years ago, I'm going to interpret that as they oppose social housing, and they are an obstacle to be routed around.

Either option is disqualifying imo.

In addition, Bilal has one of the most conservative voting records in recent BoS history. I's like to see some acknowledgement of this from a self-proclaimed "progressive".

... "blocked housing".

These are the same talking points used by Grow SF and other neoliberal attackers. My take is that either a) he was extremely uninformed about local politics and did not think much about a $10k+ donation, or b) he was informed but cannot admit that he was wrong about Bilal.

For context: I am a DSA SF member and went to one of Saikat's SF resident zoom calls.

When I asked Saikat why he donated to Bilal, he said he believed they were both progressives but he though Bilal would do more to get housing built, and that he was disappointed in some of Dean's votes that...

The SF Chronicle recently compared Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, mayor-elect of NYC, to Levi's heir Daniel Lurie. They could not be more different.

How the dreaded β€˜builder’s remedy’ could come to San Francisco Following a damning report, a YIMBY group is threatening to sue the city over its zoning plan.

Facts: β€œThe report shouldn’t be a shock to anyone...because zoning is just one factor of 100. I’m afraid β€˜We’re going to sue the government until the capital markets do what we want’ is basically the textbook definition of San Francisco YIMBYism.” - @uhshanti.bsky.social

SF activists level up the anti-ICE fight The chaos in Chicago and Portland is inspiring strategy among local activists

"The energy of people opposing immigration enforcement downtown stands in contrast to the relative inaction by city officials, including Mayor Daniel Lurie [who] has mostly remained quiet on Trump’s orders for mass deportation."

SF activists are doing great; electeds not so much, except Fielder.

The way to fight racist power imbalances between landlords & tenants isn’t more private property. It’s fighting for tenants associations, tenants rights, and tenants protections to build democratic community power.
