It’s hard not to be bitter and angry about nearly everything right now. I do think my business, and the flexibility and security it gives me, is a bright spot amid the gloom. I cannot fathom how miserable it must be to still be in academia right now. 💔

On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamilla’s medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being “served food that contained worms.” A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees. The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.
The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.
But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

This is how I understood his speech. To prevent violence by protesters and maintain order. (not saying I agree with the decision, just saying I agree that people are misunderstanding him in their excitement to fight back against ICE)
I see a lot of people celebrating this move by Walz, but isn’t he mobilizing the Guard because he anticipates widespread protests? i.e., to prevent looting and act against protestors?
I think folks are reading it as him going against ICE and I don’t think that’s right.
