Roomy Events, by OpenMeet
While Roomy is now quitely operational with a growing handful of pilot spaces, before we make a grander reveal about that particular milestone we have another exciting Report from the Atmosphere to sh...
Building in the atmosphere means you don't have to go it alone.
We know organizers, and the groups-of-coordination they facilitate, require digital infrastructure for events planning. Ergo @roomy.space needs Events.
@tompscanlan.bsky.social agreed and magicked @openmeet.net straight into Roomy.

1. A short thread on a Bluesky phenomenon that might be described as "They are a dead-eyed cultist who must be cast out lest the heresy take root!" OP has blocked me for mocking them - I'd usually obscure their name but since they themselves were quote-dunking to demand someone else be blocked ...

Even if Secretary Hegseth backs down and narrows his extremely broad threat against Anthropic, great damage has been done. Even in the narrowest supply-chain risk designation, the government has still said that they will treat you like a foreign adversary-indeed, they will treat you in some ways worse than a foreign adversaryβsimply for refusing to capitulate to their terms of business. Simply for having different ideas, expressing those ideas in speech, and actualizing that speech in decisions about how to deploy and not deploy one's property. Each of these things is fundamental to our republic, and each was assaulted βnot anything like for the first time but nonetheless in novel waysβby the Department of War last week. Most corporations, political actors, and others will have to operate under the assumption that the logic of the tribe will now reign.
Fascinating article. It argues that the republic is already dead, and the DoW incident is merely the signal

Anthropic and Alignment
Anthropic is in a standoff with the Department of War; while the companyβs concerns are legitimate, it position is intolerable and misaligned with reality.
Anthropic: βUsing these systems for mass domestic surveillance is incompatible with democratic valuesβ
Ben Thompson: Refusing to build mass domestic surveillance is incompatible with democratic values
Certainly a take.

"The Department of War may use the AI System for all lawful purposes, consistent with applicable law, operational requirements, and well-established safety and oversight protocols. The AI System will not be used to independently direct autonomous weapons in any case where law, regulation, or Department policy requires human control, nor will it be used to assume other high-stakes decisions that require approval by a human decisionmaker under the same authorities. Per DoD Directive 3000.09 (dtd 25 January 2023), any use of AI in autonomous and semi-autonomous systems must undergo rigorous verification, validation, and testing to ensure they perform as intended in realistic environments before deployment."

Really excited for this! Following on @semble.so enables βfaceted followingβ: not simply following someone "wholesale", but rather specific facets of their work - their AI agents collection, open source philosophy, or whatever resonates with you. Faceted following is also a signal for the curator >

Permissioned Data Diary 2: Buckets
The second in a series of posts building up a solution to permissioned data on atproto. We introduce buckets: a new protocol primitive for creating a shared social context.
new blog post on permissioned data in atproto! this one introduces "buckets", the protocol-level primitive for shared access control. I walk through two approaches that don't quite work and land on something that I think does

PDSs are fine the issue is RSS feeds can't always be fetched from the browser because site operators don't always put the right CORS headers on them.
I'm just about to make the backend public

CORS is the fundamental reason, need at least a feed proxy to get around that and at that point might as well do a whole appview etc.
