First person works for noir private eyes, unreliable narrators, and nothing else.

And if you don’t like those? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Ugh. You really seemed to be the anchor of the writing over there. Hope someone else is smart enough to pick you up. Been happy with my purchases from the store. Will be buying more.

Yes, gentle reader...

I laughed.

In fact, if I'd been drinking some soda, it would have been fountaining out my nose.

(Now there's an image you didn't need. ;-))

When men's workload is automated, it's genius; when women's workload is automated it's a character flaw and morally questionable.

We're at a point where there are no cheap options to retreat to and no price points that guarantee quality. Every run-down studio is $1400, every fast food meal is $17, every luxury condo has peel-n-stick tiles, every $300 pair of boots falls apart. Endless expensive mediocrity.

I fully support universities, but credentialism has created a world where people end up in high places having completely bypassed any real world experience in a field. It’s not sustainable.

Thinking back on the Harrison bio, a lot of Hitchcock’s later side projects were run by former collaborators. He was basically looking after his people.

SURREAL FACT: Peter was beloved by Pink Floyd, so after he died, the members set up some funds for his children. That allowed Naomi to pursue acting. Without Pink Floyd making that decision we probably would not have "Mulholland Drive."

There's a long line of moral & political philosophy suggesting it'd be awesome if we lived in a world where our every infinitesimal discomfort were salved. But I know of no defensible philosophy that says the tiny discomforts of a few should take priority over the basic subsistence of the great many

To take this seriously a sec: when your political-economic system allows massive inequality to explode, it creates a class of people who have no material problems but do have the resources & power to make their trivial irritations the central business of politicsβ€”at immense material cost to others.

And yet classic film noir was made under the Hayes Code and depicted casually corrupt and violent policing in a way that would absolutely not be acceptable today. In so many ways, Hayes Code works were far more adult.

The recent biography of Joan Harrison is wonderful. She ran the TV series. Seeing how hard they worked on the scripts for the films (and that they were group projects) makes you realize why films and TV today aren’t the same.

Seriously, if sane governance ever returns, this shit needs to be shut down and the crooks investigated & prosecuted. Trump Jr. is heavily involved in both Kalshi & Polymarket, and it’s a conduit for corruption that serves no legitimate purpose.

so apparently Brian McGinnis has been denied access to both his family and legal representation since a sitting senator broke his arm

A reminder that library streaming services charge the libraries per viewing. Costs tend to be very high and usage limited to a very small number of users.

It’s not sustainable for everyone to stream movies that the library has available to check out on DVD.
