Award-winning documentarian Jon Mitchellβs new book and the ongoing dialogue of scholars, advocates and artists are calling attention to Okinawaβs long history of geopolitical struggle.
In March 1942, the #ImperialJapaneseNavy took control of #Guam; a brutal occupation in which the #Chamorro people were forced to relocate their villages, surrender their food supplies, and perform hard labor. The memory of this period is still very much alive on the island. #PacificHistoryGuide

February 19, 2026 INSTRUCTIONS TO ALL PERSONS OF JAPANESE ANCESTRY As survivors and descendants of the mass removals, detention, deportation, and family separation targeting our community during WWII, we refuse to stand by idly while our friends and neighbors are violently disappeared, forcibly removed, mass incarcerated, and separated from family members. We decry the murders of community members and at least 37 people in ICE custody and enforcement in 2025. We reject false narratives that state violence is "unavoidable," a "justifiable military action," necessary for "national security"βthe same arguments used as they forced our parents, grandparents, aunties, and uncles into U.S. concentration camps in 1942. On this Day of Remembrance, we call on Japanese Americans and all people who believe in "Never Again" to demand justice for those we have lostβon the streets and hidden away in ICE detention centers. To break this cycle of state violence. To rise up and resist, together. We bravely commit to being the allies our familes needed during WWII. STOP REPEATING HISTORY. #TsuruForSolidarity #FreeFamilies #FreeThemAll
84 years ago today, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, ordering the removal and incarceration of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans, about two-thirds of whom were US citizens. The Day of Remembrance this year comes as we see DHS buying land and warehouses for more camps now.
On this day, the United States Navy began landing 70,000 U.S. Marines at Iwo Jima. Over the course of the following five weeks, more than 6,100 Marines would die on the the island; this was the first and last battle in the Pacific war in which American casualties outnumbered Japanese. 1/2
On today's blog: we're headed to the site of one of the most consequential military surrenders in #British history, and the #SecondWorldWar: the old Ford Motor Factory in #Singapore.

THE NAVY OF THE AIR. When the fleet was ordered to Mexican waters in April, in connec- tion with the occupation of Vera Cruz, two aeroplane sections of two aeroplanes each, completely manned and with full outfits, were sent on board the Mississippi and Birmingham to Vera Cruz and Tam- pico, respectively. There was no occasion for the use of aeroplanes at Tampico. Those at Vera Cruz were used continually, and although the Navy's aeroplanes are not fitted for land work, for 43 days they did a good deal of scouting over the trenches protecting Vera Cruz. There were daily flights without regard to weather or other conditions. To every call made upon them our young aeronauts made ready and cheerful response, and their forethought and caution prevented any accidents. Their scout work in the sky assured the Commander-in-Chief that no mines had been planted, enabled him to locate sunken works, and was of inestimable value in the combined operations of the Army and Navy. The heavy toll that must be paid for progress in all invention calling for daring has resulted in the death this year of one air pilot, Lieut. J. D. Murray, United States Nary. His name will be remembered among the immortals who have given their lives to the development of aeronautics. He was an efficient officer, courageous in life, mourned in death.

Fred Korematsu was vindicated and lives forever for those who defend our civil liberties Today and every day, remember him and one of the darkest moments in American history: the unlawful imprisonment and disenfranchisement of Japanese-Americans in the US.

Apologies for the late notice, but there will be no Saturday blog post this week. We'd love for you to spend the time meeting your neighbors and celebrating what makes America so special - our diverse cultural heritage. Happy discovering!

Many interactions this weekend made me realize how misinformed most Americans are about Shinto.
I think I'm going to put together a new convention panel called "You Dont Know Shinto."
Damn good stuff here.

Reading Mizuki's diaries from this time paint a different picture than what he portrays in Showa.
The real Mizuki was much more thoughtful, more introspective. He wrote upon being drafted "I sometimes think being alive at this time is the only thing worse than death."
So begins the Shigeru Mizuki Thread! I read through all of Showa before the end of the year but didnβt have time to write up my thoughtsβ¦ and have been dragging my heels on reading Hitler for obvious reasons lolβ¦ π§΅

I have some great Resolutions for the New Year:
Greetings #PHG fans! One of our resolutions in 2026 is to add more complexity to our #Korea and #Philippines pages. If you have some knowledge of local history there, please let me know and we'll get you credited with adding some more context to the #PacificHistoryGuide. Happy New Year, everyone!
