If you're ever in doubt, just use Signal with the usernames feature. Don't use any of those "signal alternative" apps unless a cryptographer AND a software dev have reviewed them. Matrix is better than nothing, but vulnerable to some protocol weaknesses that a three-letter-agency might exploit.
