Haha, spot on! Phrygian Dominant (the Yngwie/Malmsteen scale) is definitely the metal king. And yes, Blues is the rule-breaker where we play minor 3rds over Major chords and call it 'style.' Once you hit Harmonic Minor modes or Blues ambiguity, the rabbit hole goes deep!
Happy Valentine's Day! β€οΈ
Today is also #fretflip's Birthday! π
Truth be told, I made the logo a Heart+Share button because Sharing is Caring, especially in music.
So another year of labor of love (or stubbornness :-)
Thanks to everyone who shared a chart over the year.
Be excellent to each other!
Totally right for functional harmony (Bach/Mozart)! But in Rock/Jazz, we often jam on static vamps (like a 5-min Dm7 groove).
In that context, Modes are 'flavor palettes' for soloing.
β’ Funky? Use Dorian (Nat 6).
β’ Metal? Use Phrygian (b2).
Itβs about coloring the improv, not rigid composition.
Perhaps the biggest lie in guitar theory: 'Dorian is just C Major starting on D.' π€₯
Technically true. Practically useless.
Here is why you should learn Modes via Parallel Comparison (e.g. Dorian = Minor with a sharp 6).

Just shipped a new guide: Visualizing Drop D Tuning.
Most charts are static images. This one is interactive, compare any scale in Standard and Drop D and see exactly what differs.
Great for visualizing the 'shifted' pentatonic boxes.

Inhumane, AI needed to solve that very tedious exercise...
