My go-to story for "Every vote really does matter! Local elections matter!" has always been a county race I covered that came down to 34 votes, but now I have a new one.

The gas stations near me (SE Florida) were also all around $3.19 tonight. I filled up last week for $2.89.

How Kansas Republicans weaponized the law to target 300 trans driver's license holders SB 244 was put into effect virtually overnight, causing chaos, panic and fear in the trans community.

New β€” I spoke to eight trans people in Kansas about the new state law that invalidated their driver’s licenses overnight, what’s it’s like to live there right now, plus details of two DMV emails exclusively obtained by The Handbasket that shed light on the law’s chaotic and cruel rollout:

OMG if you google various Olympics phrases a big cartoon wolf-dog runs across your screen

(seems to work for some search terms and not others)

THREAD.

A collection of photographs of excellent goats I have met during walks in the British countryside.

You will find the all-important captions to each photo in the alt text.

The fact that this was the last movie I saw before the pandemic (so...didn't go to the theater for another year and a half after RoS) made it even WORSE.

Writing can be frustrating and exhausting, and sometimes it can feel like flying. Being able to articulate what I mean in words all the time has made me smarter and happier too. Writing a lot is deeply important and will change your life. Even if you think it sucks! It probably does at first!

The collapse of curiosity driven research has occurred in STEM too. Everything has to be outcomes focused - cure disease, grow better crops, etc. But so much of what humanity has discovered is from "basic" curiosity-driven science. I'm hugely in favor of funding curiosity in every discipline.

It was so strange! They straight up led with "this doesn't mean there's been an arrest btw" and then just kept speculating

Really glad this newsletter highlights the "behind the athlete" cameras they're using...seeing that angle in downhill skiing and in luge REALLY made it clear how obscenely fast they're moving

As a logistics nerd, I just eat this stuff up. Do you have *any* idea how tightly choreographed and practiced all these movements had to be to get the scene set in one commercial break of time?

Then to tear it all down and remove it just as quickly after!

People with no photography skills, appreciation or understanding consistently devalue photojournalists in a way that's just heartbreaking.

Washington Post Begins Sweeping Layoffs

NEWS: The cuts were so severe that at least one department head asked to leave The Post rather than be included in the planning.

Peter Finn, The Post's international editor, requested that he be laid off once he learned about the scope of the cuts to his section.

Being a journalist is sick: I just contacted a pre-eminent jaguar conservationist in Argentine with a question that has been weighing on me for ages and he wrote back right away with an informed answer.

This is absolutely bonkers. Surely some of the Capitals players are on the international hockey teams (also, the Post used to have some of the best figure skating coverage! I loved their reporters' live tweets)
