I've noticed my genre of choice has been affected by this for years- strange to see it elsewhere. I never minded raw and some of my favourite tracks fall under it, but I do miss that softer side, especially when both mixed together perfectly-- it was magical. Back to the hard trance for me I guess.
Would you say it was closer to a fractional amount, perhaps approaching the quantity .5?
That's about all. Hard to capture the entirety of what I feel on this. My friends mean a lot to me, and I want them to be able to enjoy a con to its fullest.
On a side note, please also submit feedback about the elevators, etc. that needs review. Let's make FWA the best it can be. ^_^
I've had plenty of people in Telegrams, Discord groups, etc. talk about their discomfort around even the gear. I think the weapons need to go at least, but there is definitely a conversation to be had about the gear too since the association is pretty heavy.
FWA has a Contact Us page which lists a safety inquiry email located at www.furryweekend.com/contact/.
I have also seen a conops email floating around on this website and the other single-letter site. While I have not validated the latter, I encourage everyone to make themselves heard on this.
I know these cosplays can be cool and it's fine to enjoy them, but please do so at a different convention or at an event catered to this. We owe our friends and the community a place where they can be themselves without fear of what is a credible threat to them.
And I would rather my friends feel safe than be on edge for the entirety of the con wondering if someone who just entered the lobby in a ballistic vest and holding a realistic weapon is about to harm them or if it's "just a prank bro."
However, we should still be able to understand the fear and unease that our friends and members in the community feel when exposed to this content while at a con that is supposed to be a safe space.
Furry conventions are not anime conventions. There are different rules that are applicable.
Several of my friends expressed discomfort at the tactical gear they saw at FWA. And the event that occurred in the atrium was equally shocking to them.
Lots of us have grown up around firearms, attended cons (AX, etc.) where cosplayers have tactical gear, etc. and it can be difficult to relate.
FWA was fun. I loved hanging out with the AV crew and I hope to be of actual assistance next year.
On another note, cons need to take a clear stance on cosplay policy and address the concerns of their attendees. The issue in question has become a recurring theme over the past couple of years.
They just need to ban tactical and weapons in general for at the con and be done with it. Their policy already precluded the one in question and would have prevented this situation but it wasn't enforced-- and look where that got us.
