Current levels are around 250 million board ft per year. This will quadruple the amount of logging on BLM lands, and could nearly wipe out the forests on BLM land in the Applegate River Watershed. The last time the BLM logged one billion board feet of timber per year in western Oregon was the 1960s.

Seiad Creek is located just over Cook and Green Pass from the headwaters of the Applegate River, and is a key habitat corridor into the Applegate River Watershed. Applegate Siskiyou Alliance is concerned about habitat connectivity and the protection of old forests on the Siskiyou Crest.

The BLM started logging on Ben Johnson Mountain above Ruch last week, and the results are exactly what we predicted. Loggers have been quickly clearing off whole stands of living, green trees on the mountain’s eastern face.

Although touted by BLM as a "salvage" timber sale, the Thom Bone Timber Sale targets living, green forests designated as Late Successional Reserves, set aside as habitat for the northern spotted owl. Thom Bone is slated to be auctioned by the BLM on December 18 at the BLM office in Medford, Oregon.
The Thom Bone Timber Sale is proposed by the BLM in the Applegate Valley in southwest Oregon.

In the Applegate watershed and on the Siskiyou Crest, public land grazing has devastating impacts to wet meadows, riparian areas, rare plants, water quality, drinking water, pollinator habitat, and also creates a lot of erosion and competition with wildlife for forage.
"The wealthy profit from public lands, and taxpayers pick up the tab: Roughly two-thirds of grazing on Bureau of Land Management land is controlled by just 10% of permit holders."

Submit a comment today to defend the Public Lands Rule! Last year, the BLM finalized the rule to help balance conservation with development on 245 million acres of public lands.
Now, the administration wants to rescind that rule, opening the door to more drilling, mining, and logging.
