Current levels are around 250 million board ft per year. This will quadruple the amount of logging on BLM lands, and could nearly wipe out the forests on BLM land in the Applegate River Watershed. The last time the BLM logged one billion board feet of timber per year in western Oregon was the 1960s.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) wants to revise their resource management plan to allow for increasing logging levels to one billion board feet per year on western Oregon BLM lands. Read long-time environmental advocate, Andy Kerr's assessment of the situation: www.andykerr.net/public-lands...
BIG NEWS! With time ticking away to pass the bill this short session, HB 4134 has cleared another hurdle. Passing out of the House with bipartisan support, the 1.25% for Wildlife initiative will move through the Senate this week.

The BLM is logging the Apple Saws Timber Sale on Ben Johnson Mountain above Ruch in the Applegate Valley. This timber sale was authorized under the guise that it will remove "dead and dying" trees; however, what is happening on the ground is much different than what was approved

Listen to lepidopterist, Dana Ross, talk about the endeavors of the Siskiyou Crest Moth Project on the Jefferson Exchange program. Moths are just as important for pollination as bees and butterflies, but less is known about them because many are strictly nocturnal.

Apple Saws Timber Sale - Applegate Valley, Oregon
The BLM started logging on Ben Johnson Mountain above Ruch last week, and the results are exactly what we predicted. Loggers have been quickly clearing off whole stands of living, green trees on the mountain’s eastern face.

These bears are adorable and funny, and they look like they're having so much fun! We have been steadily going through all our game camera footage from the summer, which helps us track and better understand wildlife in the Applegate Siskiyous!
Need something to brighten your day? Look no further! These video clips of a black bear family and friends, bathing and playing in a small spring were caught on ASA's game cameras throughout late summer in a secluded location in the Applegate.

Although touted by BLM as a "salvage" timber sale, the Thom Bone Timber Sale targets living, green forests designated as Late Successional Reserves, set aside as habitat for the northern spotted owl. Thom Bone is slated to be auctioned by the BLM on December 18 at the BLM office in Medford, Oregon.
The Thom Bone Timber Sale is proposed by the BLM in the Applegate Valley in southwest Oregon.

"Removing dead trees will not save us from fast-moving wildfires" is an important read!

In the Applegate watershed and on the Siskiyou Crest, public land grazing has devastating impacts to wet meadows, riparian areas, rare plants, water quality, drinking water, pollinator habitat, and also creates a lot of erosion and competition with wildlife for forage.
"The wealthy profit from public lands, and taxpayers pick up the tab: Roughly two-thirds of grazing on Bureau of Land Management land is controlled by just 10% of permit holders."
A really good article about how the wealthy profit from public lands grazing.
