This. So much of the perceived value of "AI" has been possible with scripts for soooo long
"Itβs a statistical model of data connected to a mechanism for producing more data that resembles the data in the model."
Our product can show you what's outside the window that's right next to you, perform a Google search slower than you can yourself, and misinform your surgeon mid-procedure, causing a catastrophic failure that will injure you for life. The entire economy is propped up on it
This is because a statistical model of word frequency is not a useful tool for modeling the complex interactions of the human body
Code is liability. AI allows us to create tremendous amounts of liability very quickly
βProductivity benefits may come at the cost of skills necessary to validate AI-written code if junior engineersβ skill development has been stunted by using AI in the first place.β

Republicans are in favor of having a gun to defend yourself from a tyrannical government unless you have a gun to defend yourself from a tyrannical government
This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.
the leaders of the civil rights era could not propose or veto legislation. they had no "power." but they had legitimacy because they were out there. Letter from a Birmingham Jail was written...FROM JAIL. But with these guys "Hey it's crazy right now and we can't do much, but give us money." LOL ok.
I get that this sounds like something from sci-fi. You talk into a device and it gives you what you want. But I don't want Google digging through my photos or all my personal files just to tell me about tires. I would rather ask the people whose job is to know about tires.
I think it's a bad sign that every major news media outlet has spent days asking whether or not murder is bad and how much child porn is an okay amount

This tracks with my own usage of AI: it seems to work best when I donβt know enough to understand that it didnβt work very thoroughly.
this is your mission. roll up to this daycare in full tactical gear to harass some kids and teachers. when you get spooked by your own shadow like a panicked horse and start shooting your gun, our pedophile president will call the person you shot a terrorist. good luck soldier
grok didn't say shit. Grok is not sentient. This is you helping musk escape accountability for this shit. Journalism fail.
itβs for exactly this reason that my library networkβs catalog system does not retain patron borrowing data, or even permit the creation of linked βfamilyβ library accounts.
the βfreeβ in βfree public libraryβ means, among other things, βfree from government interference.β
i remember someone telling me nonprofits are so much worse because they'll look you in the eyes and tell you that you're supposed to have it worse because you're involved in a β¨missionβ¨ or something. you're supposed to internalize and valorize shittier working conditions
tbf, much of what's happening in the AI realm today qualifies as a waking nightmare...
βI am so bored by AI. One of the things I love about the theatre is AI canβt do it.β

Anyway, I'll take this brief connection as an opportunity to thank you for your contributions - I always enjoy your work and outlook
I don't know you IRL, but you seem like someone who likes to go 100%, so I assume you're getting one now tho!

When you think about it, the phrase βearning a livingβ is really quite vile.

it's one of my biggest struggles talking to other people that _work for a public library_
One of the things I think the vibe coding stuff hasn't yet really come to terms with is junior developers and owners often think the key skill for developers is ability to write code, and principal developers know the /actual/ super power that distinguishes principals is their ability to debug.
β₯ "I ask you, human to human, [..] leave the AI to your quantitative tasks if you have to use it at all. Face the world with your thoughts and enrich them through real-world experience. The best thoughts are the ones that have been felt, anyway."
"You can only critically assess the output of an AI chatbot if you have the skills to do so, and you donβt develop these skills by using AI. Before you can be critical of an AI summary, you have to learn to understand a text without having it summarized by an AI tool."
