I don't know if the problem is unwillingness, incompetence, or laziness, but the Minister for Road Safety has to take responsibility for the consequences of his inaction, and resign.
We must do it again with more politicians. In one week, Senator Craughwell went from giving out about cyclists on Twitter to standing up for safer infrastructure in the Seanad. It was an extraordinary turnaround and highlights what we all know - experience beats knowledge every time
7 deaths on our roads over the weekend including a 16 y/o girl walking her dog.
Why the obsession over hi-vis? Why the reduction in active travel funding?
Where are the 30km/h zones?
Where are the red light cameras?
Why no enforcement?
Why aren't intelligent speed systems default on new cars?

Here's the Senator's address to the Seanad the next day:

This stands out.
"Despite the increase in the number of vehicles on Irish roads since 2009, the overall number of gardaí dedicated to full-time traffic duties has fallen by 40pc."

We did a similar exercise with a Senator who had been critical of cyclist behaviour. He described it as "a scary experience" and the next day spoke in the Seanad (Irish senate) about the need for safer cycling infrastructure.

Shocking, but not surprising
“Children are not killed because they're not wearing high-vis vests. Children are killed because people are speeding, they are inattentive, they are drink driving, they're on their mobile phones, or the design of our roads is not appropriate.” Cllr Alan Curran

The petrol station on Old Cabra Rd has been in breach of planning for 6 yrs & then has the neck to use planning laws to delay delivery of bus & bike lanes needed in Cabra. Locals have had enough. Protest for safer streets on Saturday @dublincycling.bsky.social @ibike.ie @dublincommuters.bsky.social
What are they complaining about? Sure haven't they got their RSA-branded hi-viz - what more do they want? 🙃

Hi Deirdre - sorry to hear about your incident. Hope you weren't hurt.
If there was a Dublin bus nearby at the time you could request that they hold the CCTV from the bus pending a Garda investigation. Then report to the Garda informing them that Dublin Bus may have footage.
Anyone spot a cyclist (me) knocked off her bike along the canal at drimnagh today by someone who drove away? If you got a reg I’d love the help to report them! @ibike.ie
child on ipad with headphones: maybe we should stop worrying about the screens kids are on adult driving looking at phone AND START WORRYING ABOUT THE SCREENS ADULTS ARE ON One thing leads to another.

@ibike.ie Hi, a colleague of mine found two bikes in a ditch this morning, ones a cargo bike with seats and a mountain bike around Dublin 6. Have any of your members reported any thefts?

The Minister for U-Turns strikes again!

The enforcement thing is probably correct but this law will only serve to demonise and other those of us who cycle. If you're not wearing hi-viz and a helmet you're a law-breaking cyclist who deserves what they get. If you are, you're a lycra-clad fanatic and not a "normal person".

What a helmeted cyclist in hi viz in broad daylight looks like to motorists:
It gets worse! Just when you thought they had come up with the worst possible legislation they've gone and made it worse again.

"After taking a wrong turn, the ArchdukeTaoiseach's carriage was crossing the Rosie Hackett Bridge when a deranged drag queen on a bicycle rode by with a potato gun. A shot rang out! The little nub of potato found its mark.
War had begun"
Huge gratitude to our sisters + brothers in @irishcyclingcmpn.bsky.social, @ibike.ie, @dublincommuters.bsky.social, @cyclingireland.bsky.social + others for fronting to giving real evidence to Oireachtas Committee this morning!
⭕ 30km/h limits DEFAULT
🦺 RSA not fit fur purpose
🚨 Enforcement FAILING
Instead of funding the enforcement of current regulations and clamping down on illegal vehicles we get this performative nonsense from the government.
This will only reduce cycling rates and thus make the roads more dangerous.
They brought in a law that you must be 16 years or older to use an e-scooter and it mustn't be able to travel faster than 20km/h.
The helmet law now being proposed is because of increased head injuries of children using e-scooters.
If the current law was being enforced we wouldn't need the new law
Fucking gombeens. Love to be seen to do something and it's inevitably the stupid knee-jerk wrong thing rather than the more difficult necessary evidence based thing that will upset some of their gombeen friends
Listen back to Ciarán Ferrie discussing this with Claire Byrne on @newstalkfm.bsky.social this morning.
It's nothing more than a smokescreen to hide the government's inaction on road safety

The sheer and utter uselessness of this government and lack of interest in doing anything more than appealing to tabloid readers
