🚨Higher Ed Petition🚨 to save a thriving & growing classics program at U Iowa from unnecessary shutdown. Crushing the humanities is closed-minded politics wanting grads to be obedient workers not critical thinkers. HELP PUSH BACK. #HistSky #MedievalSky #HigherEd

β€œAlmost all the 165 people killed in the attack were girls aged between seven and 12, according to local officials. There were around 170 girls at the school in southern Iran’s Minab at the time.β€œ

The boys’ club: How Epstein’s influence shaped the exclusion of women in STEM In one email, an AI researcher suggested it’s β€œhard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why another woman hates you.”

In 2018, an elite group of academics and scientists planned an exclusive retreat. The guests were picked by prominent New York literary agent John Brockman.

The problem? Brockman added two women to the list, and his biggest funder β€”Β Jeffrey Epstein β€” wanted them out.

β€˜Viking' was a job description, not a matter of heredity, massive ancient DNA study shows Study reveals family histories of black-haired Vikings who set forthβ€”and diedβ€”far from home

an interesting study that complements what historians have been saying for quite a while. people moved in the European Middle Ages, settled elsewhere. and genetics can tell where a person's ancestors came from but now which communities they belonged to #medievalsky

'In a further sign of the impact of the financial crisis gripping the sector, new data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (Hesa) show that 244,755 academic staff were working in the UK in 2024-25.' Previous year number was 246,930.

If you don’t read old stuff you’ll never discover that people in the olden days had the same thoughts and feelings and dreams and anxieties you do, sometimes articulated differently, sometimes exactly the same way. You are never truly alone in anything and old writings are a neon sign telling you so

Let me also repeat the basic truth that writing is thinking. The act of writing is thinking. When you start to write, you don't know what you really think until you finish writing it. THEN you know, because you did the writing and the thinking.

If this trend consolidates, might as well open quite an unexpected job market for any Ph.D. in Medieval Studies. After all, who better sentimental advisor than a conversant in Eloise & Abelard, Tristan & Isolde, Geneviève & Lancelot, Calisto & Melibea? #MedievalSky

This is incredible. Like the previous few years, near all of the electricity capacity added to the grid was clean energy. The Inflation Reduction Act helped this - it made solar & wind cheaper but it also for the first time had a standalone incentive for grid storage. Look at the growth in storage!
