Save Prop I and Affordable Housing Funds
On Wednesday February 25, billionaire Mayor Daniel Lurie and Supervisor Bilal Mahmood announced a tax cut for wealthy real estate investors. They propose to repeal 2020's Proposition I, which hasβ¦
The Board of Supervisors should reject this giveaway to wealthy corporate real estate owners, and instead invest Prop I funds in social housing, as San Franciscans voted to do in 2020.

Instead of failed neoliberal strategies, we can directly invest in housing San Franciscans of all incomes. With progressive revenue sources like Prop I, we can build social housing available to all based on models like Vienna, where renters pay <=25% of their income on rent.

Giving tax breaks to speculators doesnβt work to build housing. After SF cut affordable housing requirements in 2023, 2024 saw the fewest housing permits filed in a decade. And even if these tax cuts built market-rate housing, it would be far too expensive for working SFans.

Lurie and Mahmood say cutting this tax will spur housing development. But Prop I mostly taxes sales of high-end office buildings, like 555 California, part-owned by Donald Trump and looking to sell:

2020βs Prop I, which passed by 15 points, raised the real estate transfer tax on sales over $10m. It has funded:
$40m for land to build 550 affordable homes,
$42m for the countryβs strongest Covid rent relief program,
$64m to take hundreds of homes off the speculative market.

Mayor Lurie and Supervisor Mahmood's βBUILD Actβ would repeal a tax on rich real estate investors that has raised over $500m for housing working-class San Franciscans can afford.
