stumbled on this banger when I pulled up that arcade racing prototype a couple days ago lol
Yeah, I only played down to RR4, but I feel like RR5 struck the perfect balance.
thanks! it probably helps that I played like 5 different Ridge Racer games within the span of a day haha
meanwhile I'm playing on an emulated PS3, which is more akin to getting an old dog and pumping it full of cocaine so it can half keep pace with the young ones until it has a heart attack

Here's why RR's drifting feels really good:
1. You turn without losing ~any speed
2. You can turn at basically any angle
3. You can perfectly hug corners
Thankfully I already had an ugly little arcade racer prototype kicking around that I could mess with. We all have one of those, right? ๐งต
these people often end up selling *themselves* and end up in leadership positions in politics and business, and of course, having people who don't know what truth is at the levers of power is poison to society; Trump is the ur-example of this kind of guy.
this type of person often ends up in positions that involve selling people on something, because it's easy to sell something when you have no problem lying about it; to them it's not even lying, they're just saying the thing that'll get them what they want. no more thought than that.
the thing I've learned about these people is that the concept of truth just does not compute in their brains.
what they're always doing is just saying what they want to say or what they think someone else wants to hear, they're not trying to reason out "is this true" "does this work"; they can't.
TIL Just Cause 3 has a "doge mode". It's pretty upsetting
I'm mostly an AI hater but on the rare occasion I interact with one of these things, Claude is the only one that doesn't make me want to gouge my eyes out

And yeah I played a bunch of them and did notice that pre-RR5 the drifting is a lot less sticky, but without that they're much less distinct imo
Yeah for sure, but then it feels very weird to have a system that's like "we do the steering for you, but if you steer well, we'll do it for you even better". Like, at that point, why not give me full control?
I would quite like to develop this thing into a full game, but as I already have one project on hiatus while I work on another, I think it'll stay a prototype for the time being. Look out for F-Minus-One in a couple years though!
Meanwhile the camera always points in the direction you're going (ie. the direction of the velocity vector) so you always know where you're going and you can clearly see how much you're drifting. /end
Fun fact: The track I'm driving on was made in an advanced prototyping tool called Microsoft Paint
So, in my prototype, I do the same thing, but you have control over that rotation. When drifting, steering will just cause the car to spin instead of change direction.
Then when you accelerate, instead of giving you speed, it rotates the velocity towards the direction the car is facing.
When a car drifts for real, it's essentially slowing down in the direction it *was* moving via friction, while speeding up in the direction it's pointing by accelerating.
What RR does is ignore physics completely, and rotate the car's velocity vector to follow an invisible rail.
As documented, in RR this is achieved by putting you on rails, but I want to maintain full control of the steering for a more challenging experience, while capturing the magic of RR.
Obviously the above looks like shit and has no juice, but the handling captures the spirit. Here's how:

dawn is the first light of the morning, so definitionally it's as dark as it can be before that point.
the saying is definitely spiritually untrue though. "things can always get worse" is more accurate
is it? because for dawn to happen it has to be completely dark. I guess you could argue the night is darkest for like, a few hours before dawn, but
@vicmsong.bsky.social 's unhinged furby story had me crying laughing, oh god
I know my left and right but it definitely feels iffier to me than up and down. As a kid I learned it because "left mouse button" is the main one and "right mouse button" brings up menus lol. Though I think what really solidifies it is knowing my dominant hand is my right hand
permitting reform could for sure, but reforming federal elections and the legislative process would probably require constitutional amendments. also IMO it should be pretty high priority if the goal is to stop another Trump from gaining power down the line and restore faith in government long-term
or like, anyone can object to new builds, so nothing gets built.
